Greece leads Mediterranean Bowling Championships medal standings

Greece led the medal standings with three golds, three silvers and 1 bronze as the 2016 Mediterranean Bowling Championships (formerly Mediterranean Challenge Cup) came to an end with the Masters finals Saturday, April 16, at RenoBowling in Bologna, Italy.

Nino Stenko and Adile Michajlow successfully defended the Masters titles for Slovenia and Turkey, respectively.

In the men’s single-elimination finals in two games total pins format, Stenko ousted his team mate and 2015 MCC Masters champion, Anže Grabrijan in the semifinals, 439-420, before he defeated All-Events chamion Vaggelis Krizinis of Greece in the gold medal match, 401-352.

Michajlow, who finished eighth in All-Events to earn the last spot for the women’s Masters, defeated All-Events gold medalist and No. 1 seed, Sue Abela, Malta; No. 2 Helga Di Benedetto, Italy and No. 3 Yiola Pastou of Cyprus, 385-357, on the way to the gold medal.

Nine of the 13 countries which participated in the event had its share of the medal haul. Krizinis was the most decorated player with three gold medals. Besides his victory in All-Events, he won the title in singles and teamed with Georgia Sagona to win in mixed doubles.

Italy was the only otherr country that won multiple gold medals as Maurizio Celli & Alessandro Spada and Helga Di Benedetto & Melania Rossi swept the titles in men’s and women’s doubles.

France with Valentin Saulnier, Julien Keller, Alexandra D’Andrade Lopes and Wendy Bartaire won the coveted mixed team title, while Lynne Fishler emerged as the women’s singles champion.

The next Mediterranean Bowling Championships will be held in Ankara, Turkey, in April 2017.
