USA sweeps Doubles gold medals at PABCON COC

Team USA swept the gold medals, Colombia the silver medals and Venezuela the bronze medals in the Doubles competition of the 4th PABCON Champion of Champions tournament Sunday at Noria Pro Bowling in Puebla, Mexico.

Stefanie Johnson & Shannon Pluhowsky averaged over 221.31 on their way to the women’s title while their team mates Tommy Jones & Chris Via averaged 220.75 to secure the men’s title.

The top three countries after eight games in Singles and eight games in Doubles automatically qualified for the 2017 World Games, which will be held in Wroclaw, Poland. Those three countries were Colombia, United States and Venezuela (pictured above).

Pluhowsky led the 24 women with 1801 and Johnson added 1740 to earn the first gold medal for Team USA in this Championships with 3541.

Singles and All-Events leader Clara Juliana Guerrero teamed with Rocio Restrepo to finish in second place with 3507 (219.19). Patricia De Faria & Karen Marcano were third with distant 3270 (204.38), just three pins ahead of Canada’s Valerie Calberry & Miranda Panas.

Jones led the U.S. duo with 1778 and Via (center) contributed 1754 to beat out Jaime Gonzalez and Singles champion Manuel Otalora (left) for the gold medal by 20 pins, 3532 to 3512.

Ildemaro Ruiz Jr., who had the field-best 1847 series, and Massimiliano Fridegotto (right) were further 30 pins behind the Colombians to take the bronze medal with 3482.

No medals were given out in All-Events, which determined the World Games qualifiers and the players who advanced to the Masters competition.

Ruiz paced the men in All-Events with 3672 total or an average of 229.50 for 16 games and was followed by Otalora in second place with 3651 and Jones in third with 3565. Guerrero led the women with 3581, 10 pins ahead of Pluhowsky (3571) with Restrepo in third place on 3501.

Action shifts to the Masters competition which will conclude the COC. The top 8 men and women in All-Events return Monday for seven games of round robin match play with 20 bonus pins for wins and 10 pins each in the event of a tie.

Once match play is concluded the top 4 players will determine the champion in best-of-three games format. In the semifinals, the No. 1 seed bowls No. 4 and No. 2 takes on No. 3. The winners advance to the gold medal match and the loser share the bronze medal.
