Ron Mohr leads top 16 into match play in Fountain Valley

2015PBAWSOBRonMohr.jpg2016PBA50AmletoMonacelli.jpgTwo-time PBA50 Player of the Year Ron Mohr of Las Vegas, averaged 241.3 in the PBA50 Fountain Valley Open presented by Track Tuesday after the second round to earn his second top qualifier honor of the 2016 season.

The 60-year-old Mohr (pictured left) led qualifying with a 3,862 16-game pinfall total, topping first round leader PBA Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli (right) in second with 3,815. Mohr averaged 251 to lead qualifying in the UnitedHealthcare Sun Bowl in The Villages in April.

In Tuesday’s second eight-game round, Mohr had a 1,941 pinfall with games of 221, 258, 246, 223, 248, 248, 277 and 220 after finishing second with a 1,921 pinfall in the first round.

“Right now I feel like I’m bowling the best I have in two years,” said Mohr, who finished second to Pete Weber in the Sun Bowl In The Villages after losing 204-162 in the title match. “My challenge is to keep my ball speed slow so that it complements my rev rate. I’m making good progress doing that.

“After The Villages I felt I could compete with anybody and my confidence has grown steadily since then,” he added. “With all the talent that’s out here (on the PBA50 Tour), I’m having to keep convincing myself that I can bowl with the best.”

Mohr, an eight-time PBA50 Tour winner, is hoping to win his first PBA50 Tour win since capturing the PBASenior Decatur (Ill.) Open title in August of 2012.

2016PBA50BrianKretzer.jpg2016PBA50ParkerBohn.jpgOne-time PBA Tour winner Brian Kretzer of Dayton, Ohio, who finished third in last week’s Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open in his PBA50 Tour debut, finished qualifying in third with a 3,738 pinfall, followed by PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III of Jackson, N.J., in fourth with 3,696, and Robert Brown of Cody, Wyo., in fifth with 3,690.

After a cashers round Wednesday morning, 24 players will compete in match play which will determine the top five players who will advance to the stepladder finals at 7 p.m. PT. All of the action will be streamed live on PBA’s online bowling channel Xtra Frame.
