Canadian men, Mexican women sweep Doubles titles

2016PCSeniorJohnChapmanThe Canadian men and the Mexican women swept the gold medals in doubles at the PABCON Senior and Super Senior Championships Wednesday at Sebelén Bowling Center in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Joe Ciach and John Chapman averaged 228 to win the senior title by 240 pins with 2738, including a 553 in game 5. Chapman (right) rolled the first 300 game of the Championships and Ciach, who had a near-perfect 297 in game 2, added 253. Ciach finished with the field-best 1402 series (233.67 average).

Mexico’s Mario Garcia and Alfonso Rodriguez took silver with 2498 and Colombia’s Nicolas Ruiz and Julio Soto got bronze with 2428.

2016PCSSMenDoublesMedalistsSliderIn the super senior division for bowlers age 60 and older, Bob Puttick and Jack Brace won the gold medal for Canada with 2468 and an average of 205.67. Brace led the way with 1262 and Puttick had 1206. The Canadians were the lone duo with an average over 200.

Edgar Gomez and Luis Madrinan of Colombia were 149 pins behind in second place with 2319 with Venezuela’s Denis Espinoza and singles champion Juan Burgillos further 94 pins back in third place with 2223.

2016PCSeniorWomenDoublesMedalistsSliderOn the women’s side, Mexico’s senior singles champion Veronica Berumen and super senior singles winner Fransuesa Sacre earned their second gold medal in as many events.

Berumen teamed with Teresa Piccini to win the gold medal in senior doubles with 2458 and an average of 204.83. The duo, which won the gold medal in doubles at the inaugural World Senior Championships in 2013, rebounded from a slow start with five games between 451 and 404 to coast to the title.

Trailing the Mexicans by 120 pins to land the silver medal were Jill Friis and France Joubert of Canada with 2338. Bronze went to Costa Rica with Sylvia Villalobos and Ghiselle Araujo on 2171.

2016PCSSWomenDoublesMedalistsSliderSacre joined forces with Alejandra Arellano to beat out Colombia’s Gloria Vargas and Nora Delgado for the gold medal in super senior doubles by 35 pins, 2128 to 2093. Canada’s Deb Linington and Marion Marco were close behind with 2080 to earn the bronze medal.

With 12 of 24 games in all-events in the books, Joe Ciach (2673; 222.75) and Veronica Berumen (2375; 197.92) sit atop the leaderboard in the senior division, while Jack Brace (244; 203.42) and Nora Delgado (2262; 188.50) pace the super senior division.

While the 80 senior bowlers will return to Sebelén Bowling Center on Thursday, August 25, for the trios event, the 40 super senior men and women will compete in mixed doubles.

2016PCSeniorSuperSeniorChampionshipsLogoThe 5th Pan American Bowling Confederation Senior Championships and the 3rd PABCON Super Senior Championships will take place from August 21-28, 2016, at Sebelén Bowling Center, a 22-laner in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The seniors (maximum four men and four women per country; must be 50 years and older in the year of the championship) will bowl for medals in Singles, Doubles, Trios, Teams, All-Events and Masters, while the super seniors (maximum two men and two women age 60 and older) will compete for medals in Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Mixed Teams, All-Events and Masters.
