Liz Johnson dominates as August Bowler of the Month

Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, New York, has been named as the August 2016 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association.

Johnson downed Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, 208-143, to not only to successfully defend her U.S. Women’s Open crown, but to capture the prestigious title for the fifth time in her USBC Hall of Fame career.

She is now second on the all-time list. Fellow USBC Hall of Famer Marion Ladewig leads with eight U.S. Women’s Open wins.

The reigning PWBA Player of the Year, the fourth seed, ousted the fifth seed, Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey, 207-168. Johnson then ousted the very talented pair from Singapore, third seed New Hui Fen, 215-200, and second seed Shayna Ng, 209-180, to advance to the title match with Pluhowsky.

Johnson finished the twenty-four games of qualifying and the first round of round robin match play in eleventh. The second round of match play saw her compile a 4-4 mark, but rise to fourth in the overall standings where she ended the match play round.

Others obtaining votes this month were Amleto Monacelli, winner of the PBA50 National Championship to benefit Riley Hospital for Children, Michael Haugen Jr., winner of the PBA Xtra Frame Gene Carter’s Pro Shop Classic, Rocio Restrepo, winner of the PWBA St. Petersburg-Clearwater Open, and Wesley Low Jr., Junior Team USA, winner of gold medals in boys singles, doubles, and team events at the 2016 World Youth Championships.
