PBA stars ready for CBS Sport Network’s Fall Swing

The PBA Tour returned to network television Wednesday with the first of five CBS Sports Network telecasts of PBA Fall Swing finals from the historic arena bay inside Thunderbowl Lanes in suburban Detroit.

Returning to the broadcast booth were veteran PBA announcer Dave Ryan along with PBA Hall of Famer and color analyst Randy Pedersen (pictured above, l-r). They will be joined by current PBA champions who will provide insights based on actually bowling on the challenging PBA Fall Swing lane conditioning patterns.

Sharing the booth for the PBA Wolf Open finals were seven-time PBA Tour champion Bill O’Neill of Langhorne, Pa., who qualified for nine different telecasts in three previous PBA Summer Swing telecasts.

The guest analyst for the Bear Open finals on Sept. 28 will be England’s Dom Barrett, a four-time PBA Tour titlist. Eighteen-time Tour winner Chris Barnes will join the broadcast team for the PBA Badger Open finals on Oct. 5 and three-time titlist Rhino Page will join the announcing team for the PBA Detroit Open finals on Oct. 12.

All five PBA Fall Swing telecasts on CBS Sports Network, including the Fall King of the Swing special event on Oct. 19, will air at 9 p.m. ET.

Xtra Frame’s exclusive live coverage of PBA Tour competition resumes with the two-day Xtra Frame PBA Parkside Lanes Open from Aurora, Ill., Oct. 1-2, followed by live start-to-finish coverage of the PBA Reality Check Tamarac Open presented by Xtra Frame from Sawgrass Lanes in suburban Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Oct. 8-9.

Both events will offer projected $10,000 first prize checks plus PBA Tour titles to the winners.
The Illinois and Florida events are the sixth and seventh events in an eight-tournament Xtra Frame PBA Tour points competition that will reward the overall winner with a $10,000 bonus.

Each event winner receives 25 points with the next 19 players earning points in descending value, starting with 19 points for second place, 18 for third, etc.

The top 10 in Xtra Frame PBA Tour points heading into Aurora are: E.J. Tackett (66), Tommy Jones (56), Ryan Ciminelli and Sean Rash (44 each), Anthony Simonsen (42), Kyle Troup (40), Shawn Maldonado (36), Jason Sterner (34), Dick Allen (33) and Bill O’Neill (31).

The Xtra Frame PBA Tour points competition ends with the PBA Xtra Frame South Point Las Vegas Open which will be part of the PBA Fall Classic presented by South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas Oct. 28-Nov. 1.

PBA stars help Team USA win four PABCON gold medals

Team USA, led by four PBA stars, collected four gold medals and four silver medals as the 2016 Pan American Bowling Confederation Championships ended Saturday in Cali, Colombia.

Gold medalists included Sean Rash in singles; John Szczerbinski and amateur AJ Chapman in doubles; Rash, Szczerbinski, Chapman, Ronnie Russell, Marshall Kent and amateur Rob Gotchall in five-man team, and Kent in the men’s Masters finale.

Silver medals were won by Szczerbinski in singles; Kent and Russell in doubles; Russell, Kent and Chapman in trios, and Russell in all-events.

PBA members Manuel Otalora won bronze in singles, and Arturo Quintero helped Mexico capture the bronze medal in trios. Colombia, including PBA members Jaime Gonzalez, Andres Gomez and Otalora won the team bronze medal.

2014PBAWSOBChrisArcaroFormer PBA Southwest Region Player of the Year Chris Hibbitts II (right) of Keller, Texas, defeated newly-inducted PBA Southwest Region Hall of Famer Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, 212-199, to win the third annual PBA Grand Casino Resort & Hotel Southwest Invitational at FireLake Bowling Center Sunday in Shawnee, Okla.

Hibbitts followed a string of three strikes with spares in the final two frames to defeat Malott, the 2014 Grand Invitational winner, and claim the $4,000 winner’s check.

After qualifying third to advance to the Round of 8, Hibbitts eliminated Nathan Bohr of Austin, Texas, 2-0, and edged Anthony Lavery-Spahr of Pasadena, Texas, 227-226, to advance to the championship match.

Malott, who qualified ninth, defeated Joe Findling of Mesquite, Texas, 2-1, in the Round of 16; Sean Lavery-Spahr of Pasadena, 2-1, in the Round of 12; defending champion Shawn Maldonado of Houston, Texas, 2-0, in the Round of 8, and Anthony Simonsen of Austin, Texas, 233-196, in the semifinal round.

As part of the tournament weekend, Malott, Rick Lawrence and FireLake Bowling Center general manager Chris Skillings (pictured above, l-r) were inducted into the PBA Southwest Region Hall of Fame.

2015PBAMattMcNielSecond-year PBA member Matt McNiel of Minneapolis and Summer Jasmin of Beckley, W.Va., won titles Sunday in a QubicaAMF PBA Midwest Region doubleheader at Cherry Lanes inside Diamond Jo Casino in Dubuque, Iowa.

McNiel, a 31-year-old left-hander bowling in only his third PBA regional event, won his first PBA Regional title and $2,000 when he defeated Brad Miller of Maryland Heights, Mo., 257-189, in the title match.

McNiel started the four-man stepladder finals with a 29-28 roll-off win over William Goodman of O’Fallon, Ill., after they tied at 237. In the semifinal match, McNiel eliminated PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., 276-186, denying Weber a chance to win his 100th overall PBA title.

In the PBA-PWBA Diamond Jo Midwest Open for women, Jasmin upset Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., who just won her second straight time PWBA Player of the Year title, 594-533, in a three-game total pinfall final match. Along with her first PBA-PWBA Regional title she earned a $900 first prize.

McNiel and Jasmin both became eligible to enter the 2017 FireLake PBA Tournament of Champions with their first PBA titles.

Smallwood edged Eugene McCune of Munster, Ind., 215-209, to advance to the championship match. In the first stepladder match, Smallwood eliminated A.J. Johnson of Oswego, Ill., 208-192.

2015PBATomDaughertyDoug Becker of Clermont, Fla., and Tom Daugherty (left) of Riverview, Fla., won seven straight matches to claim the PBA Serra Bartlett Chevrolet Cordova Over/Under Doubles title and $4,200 first prize Sunday at Cordova Bowling Center in Cordova, Tenn.

Becker and Daugherty defeated Dave White of Collierville, Tenn., and Tommy Berish of Cordova, 3-0, in the best-of-five-game title match, 421-305, 465-299, and 482-359.

The winning team advanced to the title match by sweeping PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker of King, N.C., and Kyle Troup of Taylorsville, N.C., 4-0 in the best-of-seven-game semifinal round while White and Berish also were perfect in eliminating Stoney Baker of Canton, Ga., and Jason Sterner of Cocoa, Fla., in the other semifinal match.

2015PBAJakobButturffJakob Butturff (right) of Chandler, Ariz., posted a 7-5 match play record and a 24-game total of 5,752 pins Sunday to win the PBA Sands Regency West/Northwest Fall Classic Open presented by Storm, concluding the PBA Northwest and West Regions’ traditional tripleheader weekend at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno.

Butturff, who earned $2,000, defeated Darren Tang of San Francisco by 166 pins for his sixth 2016 and career title to go along with his first PBA Tour title, won in the PBA Xtra Frame Lubbock Sports Open earlier in the year. Tang had an 8-4 match play record and 5,586 pins.

2016PBA5008RonMohr4In the companion PBA50 Sands Regency Open, Ron Mohr (left) of Las Vegas went 8-2 and knocked down 5,272 total pins for 22 games to top Derek Gregory of Chowchilla, Calif., for his 17th PBA50 regional title and a $1,500 prize. Gregory had 4,803 pins.

The Challenge was open to players who had never won a PBA title.

Closing out the month, the Sept. 23-25 QubicaAMF PBA Regional calendar includes the Florence Bowling Center Central Open in Florence, Ky.; the Thunderbowl Midwest Open (and PBA50 Midwest Open) in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and the TSI On-Site Express Northwest Open (and PBA50 TSI On-site Express Open) at Narrows Plaza Bowl in Tacoma, Wash. Also scheduled for the Sept. 23-25 weekend is the PBA/PBA50 Millsboro Lanes Eastern Doubles in Millsboro, Del.

PBA Tour competitor B.J. Moore, formerly of Apex, N.C., and PWBA competitor T’Nia Falbo, a former Maryland Eastern Shore collegiate star, were married on Sept. 10 and are now residing in Falbo’s hometown, Greensburg, Pa.

Also exchanging wedding vows: PBA Tour competitor J.R. Raymond of Gaylord, Mich., and Alisha Kovach on Sept. 17 in Saginaw, Mich.

PBA Tour champion Stuart Williams, a native of England now living in Phoenix, and wife Tina became first-time parents when Brady Stephen Williams arrived on Sept. 18, weighing in at 7 pounds, 11 ounces.
