Stefanie Nation brings home first gold medal for USA in Singles event at Women's World Championships

For the first time in WWC, the world champion wasn't crowned after six games but decided in a final of the top 4 players after the preliminaries. In the tittle match, Nation defeated Sandra Gongora (right), Mexico, 167-131, to claim the gold medal. Gongora received the silver medal while Anja Ginge Jensen, Denmark, and Krista Pöllänen, Finland, shared the bronze medal.

Nation, Gongora, Ginge, Pöllänen advance to Singles finals at Women's World Championships

2009WWCStefanieNation_small.jpg2009WWCSandraGongora_small.jpgTeam USA's Stefanie Nation, Sandra Gongora, Mexico, Anja Ginge Jensen, Denmark, and Krista Pöllänen from Finland finished 1-4 in the Singles preliminaries of the 2009 Women's World Championships en route to advance to the finals on Thursday, July 30. Nation (left) had games of 228, 257, 205, 242, 206 and 223 in Squad 1, an average of 226.83 over six games, and remained atop the leaderboard for the rest of the day. Ginge led Squad 2 while Gongora (right) and Pöllänen moved into the top 4 in Squad 3.

Ginge, Guerrero, Hulsch crack top 4 in Singles Squad 2

Stefanie Nation, United States, held on to the lead with 1361 six-game total and an average of! 226.83. The top 4 players at the end of the day will advance to the finals on Thursday, July 30, 2009 starting at 5.30pm.

Team USA's Stefanie Nation sets the pace in Singles event

2009WWCStefanieNation_small.jpgThe youngest of the six Team USA members, Stefanie Nation (pictured left), set the pace in the Singles competition in the 2009 Women's World Championships at Cashman Center in Las Vegas. Nation, 25, led the first of three squads in the Singles preliminaries with 1361 six-game total and an average of 226.83. She outaveraged her nearest competitor, Helen Johnsson, Sweden, by more than 10 pins. The preliminaries will continue with Squads 2 and 3. All players bowl six games on the short pattern. The top 4 players will advance to the finals on Thursday, July 30.

Real action at the 2009 Women's World Championships starts with Singles event

Unofficial Practice02_small.jpgThe 2009 Women's World Championships were declared open on Monday evening at the Cahman Center in Las Vegas. Real action starts on Tuesday morning 9am local time with the the Singles event. 228 of the best female bowler in the world from 45 WTBA member federations were split into three squads to bowl six games on the Stockholm pattern, the shorter pattern of the two chosen by Technical delegate Daniel Falconi, a standout from Mexico. All players will bowl one six-game block. The top 4 players at the end of the day will advance to the finals on Thursday, July 30.
