Kim Yeon-Ju (r.), Korea, celebrated a great comeback in the title match of the Girls Masters at the 11th World Youth Championships, defeating Laura Fonnegra, Colombia, three-games-to-two, iSunday at Tali Bowl in Helsinki, Finland. Korea also won the title in Boys Masters as Kim Ju-Young /l.) defeated Shin Seung-Hyeon in a great all-Korean final, 3-1. Korea dominated the medal hunt in Helsinki, winning 6 gold medals, 2 silver and 5 bronze, and was the sole country that medaled in all ten disciplines.

Korean girls break the leaders curse to claim the title from top seed
The Korean girls (pictured left with the boys) broke the leaders curse as they became the first No. 1 seed who has won a match in the playoffs of the World Youth Championships. Korea defeated No. 4 England in the semifinals of the Team event, 816-756, to advance to the title match against No. 2 Singapore (860-769 winner over Malaysia). The 4th seeded U.S. boys flew past No. 1 Estonia, 942-786, to set up a title match against the Kboys from Korea, who topped No. 3 Australia, 812-755.
Estonian boys power their way into the lead to earn the No. 1 seed
The boys from Estonia (pictured) jumped from 6th to 1st place to earn the No. 1 seed for the Boys Team finals at the World Youth Championships. The Estonians led the field of 33 teams with 5008 (208.67) with Korea second (4962) and Australia third (4952). Overnight leader United States slipped to fourth place with 4932. Andrew Koff, USA, won the gold medal in All Events with 4036 18-game total with Park Jong-Woo, Korea, second (3994) and Samu Valaranta, Finland, third (3965).

Laura Fonnegra and Maria Jose Rodriguez (l-r) from Colombia won the gold medal in Girls Doubles at the 11th World Youth Championships in Helsinki, Finland, defeating equally tough Singaporeans Daphne Tan and New Hui Fen on long oil, 481-473. So far, each of the three zones of the World Tenpin Bowling Association, Asia, Europe and America, have won one gold medal. With three of the six playoffs (Boys and Girls Singles, Doubles and Team event) in the books, the leader's curse is still intact.
Malaysia's Syimir Abdul Razak shoots the first 300 game of the Championships
Adam Cairns, England, won the first gold medal in the Boys division at the 11th World Youth Championships in Finland when he defeated Sam Cooley, Australia, 210-139, to claim the title in Boys Singles. In the championship match, Cairns raced out to an early lead and never looked back. Cooley received the silver medal while tournament leader Park Jong-Woo, Korea, and Francois Lavoie, Canada, shared the bronze medal.
Defeats Junior Team USA's Brittni Hamilton to win Girls Singles
Kim Yeon-Ju1, Korea, defeated Brittni Hamilton, United States, in the championship match of Girls Singles, 192-155, to win the first gold medal of the 11th World Youth Championships. In the semifinals Hamilton, eliminated top seeded Carmen Haandrikman, Netherlands, 60-40 in rolloff after a 188-188 tie, while Kim, topped Diana Zavjalova, Latvia, 214-204. Hamilton, who has won USBC Junior Gold Championships last week, earned the silver medal. Haandrikman and Zavjalova shared the bronze.

The 11th World Youth Championships were officially ushered in Saturday with the opening ceremonies at Tali Bowl (right). A field of 46 countries, made up of 146 boys and 107 girls, were welcomed by the Finnish Bowling Federation on the eve of the competition. The tournament begins Sunday with girls singles. Medals will be awarded in Singles, Doubles, Team, All Events and Masters match-play.

The 2010 World Tenpin Bowling Association World Youth Championships, hosted by the Finnish Bowling Federation, will be held from July 23rd through Aug. 2nd, 2010 at 36-lane Tali Bowl in Helsinki. So far 257 players from 47 WTBA member federations who must not have reached the age of 21 years on January 1, 2010. will compete in Singles, Doubles, 4-player Team event, All Events and Masters in the 8-day competition starting on July 25th. The World Youth Championships are contested every other year.Â
Canada will compete at the under-20 World Youth Championships which will be held in Helsinki, Finland, July 24-August 1, 2010. Tali Bowl, the site of the 1987 World Championships and many European championships, will host the event. Bowlers from 48 countries are expected to participate. Canada’s representatives earned the right to wear the red and white at the 2009 National Championships held in Burlington, Ontario in May 2009. Deborah Chan and Damien Skellings, Calgary, Alberta will
coach the teams.
