I have returned from five days in Las Vegas for the annual Bowling Writers' Association of America (BWAA) convention, held in conjunction with Bowl Expo. Since the merge of the ABC and WIBC into USBC, the BWAA wasn't able to meet during the ABC (now USBC) Convention Week, as in past years.
The International Bowl Expo 2006 was held at the Las Vegas Hilton and proprietors from all over the world and the entire bowling industry were onsite. Nearly 300 exhibitors presented their latest products in the two-day Trade Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center, June 28–29. Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City, was the perfect keynote speaker for the 2006 Convention of the Bowling Proprietors Association of America at the Hilton Hotel June 28, writes Dick Evans (left). Giuliani, a possible presidential candidate in 2008, talked about how leaders should deal with adversity and he should know after the way he responded to the terrorist attacks in 2001.
Former New York City Mayor and international icon, Rudy Giuliani was the main keynote speaker at International Bowl Expo 2006 which ended on Friday in Las Vegas, Nevada. Giuliani shared his principles of leadership with the IBE 2006 attendees during the General Session on Wednesday morning, June 28th at Las Vegas Hilton. Giuliani's book, Leadership, was a bestseller, spending 25 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List, including five weeks at Number 1.
Carmen Salvino, known world-wide as a true bowling ambassador and the greatest showman in the history of the Sport, has been selected as the 2006 recipient of the John Davis Award. The presentation of this prestigious, annual Award was made during Bowl Expo in Las Vegas. Salvino now joins an impressive list of previous honorees that include: Joyce Deitch (2001), John Weber (2002), Ted Hoffman, Jr. (2003), Jim Dressel (2004) and Mark Gerberich (2005).
Coaches, pro shop operators from around the world gather to learn, network
The 2006 International Bowling Pro Shop and Instructors Association Educational Conferenceand Bowling Coaches Summit concluded after a three-day run of seminars led by many of the sport's leading figures. About 300 adult, youth, high school and collegiate coaches, pro shop employees, bowling ball manufacturing representatives and center proprietors from around the world attended the cooperative event at the Texas Station Hotel.
USBC President Mike Carroll has announced the return of women's bowling on television. Gary Beck (right) of Killer B Promotions has signed a contract with ESPN 2 to broadcast six shows in September and October.
Veteran bowling industry figure opens coaching/pro shop summit
Bowling legend Len Nicholson, who had a major impact on the careers of many of the greatest professional bowlers in history and the sport itself, shared some of his insight from 50 years of industry experience in his June 25 keynote address to open the International Bowling Pro Shop and Instructors Association Educational Conference and Bowling Coaches Summit. The summit is being held in conjunction with International Bowl Expo June 28-30 in Las Vegas.
Normally, going to the Bowling Proprietors Association of America Convention and the BPAA's Bowl Expo is not something that stirs my journalistic imagination. But not this year...I am charged up mentally and can hardly wait for the 2006 BPAA Convention and Bowl Expo June 26-30 at the Hilton Hotel/Convention Center in Las Vegas.

The convention takes place at the host hotel, the Las Vegas Hilton, June 25–30, while the Las Vegas Convention Center will host the two-day Trade Show, June 28–29. "We’re excited as we bring International Bowl Expo back to the event’s most popular destination, Las Vegas, Nevada," Jeff Bojé (right), BPAA President, wrote in his welcome letter.
