Conn, Zakrzewski capture USBC Junior Gold Championships titles

But they also gained two teammates who showed calm under fire. Maggie Zakrzewski (right) of Palatine, Ill., overtook Josie Earnest to capture the girls' title while Mike Conn (left) of Crestwood, Ky., finished off his big day with a victory over Andrew Koff in the final, position round games at Woodland Bowl.

Bardol, Hamilton lead way into Junior Gold Championships finals

2009JuniorGoldChrisBardol_small.jpg2009PYCBrittniHamilton_small.jpgChris Bardol won't have the opportunity to cheer on his girlfriend, Brittni Hamilton, during Friday's match play round of the USBC Junior Gold Championships presented by Brunswick. Bardol (l.) finished the semifinals with a 1,307 series to make sure he would be playing on the final day. With a 6,495 total he will take a 105-pin lead into Friday's match play finals. Hamilton (r.) was running away with the top seed for the girls with 6,228 total.

Junior Team USA member takes a big step at USBC Junior Gold Championships

Top 150 males and top 78 females advance to the Thursday's semifinals

The Junior Team USA member was about to bowl his final six-game block on Wednesday afternoon at the USBC Junior Gold Championships presented by Brunswick. In 138th place after two days of qualifying, he knew he needed a big day at Woodland Bowl. Before each shot Bowers would remind himself of his task with a simple look at the top of his shoes. The left one read "You can do this!"; the right had "Stay slow." (pictured)

Kentucky's Mike Conn rolls first perfect game at USBC Junior Gold Championships

2009JuniorGoldMikeConn_small.jpgThe lane conditions proved to be difficult for competitors during the first qualifying rounds of the United States Bowling Congress Junior Gold Championships presented by Brunswick. But Tuesday saw scoring rebound and Mike Conn (pictured left) of Crestwood, Ky., broke through to produce the tournament's first perfect game. Conn, who attends Bellarmine University, rolled the 300 game at Western Bowl in the second game of his six-game qualifying block. It was his ninth certified 300 game but the first he has bowled on Sport Bowling conditions.

First-timers feel jitters at USBC Junior Gold Championships

2009JuniorGoldLogo_small.jpg By the time most youth bowlers make it to their first USBC Junior Gold Championships presented by Brunswick, they have enjoyed some success on the lanes and feel prepared for a major tournament. But a few athletes who made their Junior Gold debuts on Monday did confess to having opening-day jitters. The Junior Gold tournament is being held at Woodland Bowl, Western Bowl and Expo Bowl in Indianapolis. The competition continues with another six-game qualifying block on Tuesday and a final six-game qualifying block on Wednesday.

Defending champs travel long road to USBC Junior Gold Championships

The journey for the defending champions has been a little longer. By winning Junior Gold titles last year in Detroit, Geoffrey Young (l.) and Kristie Petravich (r.) also earned spots on 2009 Junior Team USA. During the last week they were busy competing in the 2009 PABCON Youth Championships.

Nearly 2,000 youth bowlers to compete in USBC Junior Gold Championships

2009JuniorGoldLogo_small.jpgThis week, a record number of youth athletes will hit the lanes for the United States Bowling Congress Junior Gold Championships presented by Brunswick. A total of 1,980 of the nation's top youth bowlers will be in Indianapolis from July 11-17 for the event, which will be conducted at Woodland Bowl, Western Bowl and Expo Bowl and will award $140,000 in scholarships.
