Champions celebrate as 2013 USBC Open Championships ends its 125-day run

The conclusion of this year's USBC Open Championships at the NBS on Sunday earned him his fourth win on the championship lanes.

2013USBCOCMiguelLopezBenLaughlin_small.jpg Perfect games have come in bunches a few times during the 2013 USBC Open Championships, and Miguel Lopez (l.) of Wichita, Kan., and Ben Laughlin (r.) of Chandler, Ariz., managed to shoot 300 on the same pair of lanes at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., on June 28. Lopez was the first to accomplish the feat as he rolled 12 consecutive strikes in the second game of team event. Laughlin then rolled the 33rd perfect game of the 2013 event.

Craig Szplett becomes first bowler in USBC Open Championships history with three 300s

Three more bowlers toss perfect games at National Bowling Stadium

2013USBCOCCraigSzplett_small.jpgCraig Szplett (pictured) of Beecher, Ill., rolled a perfect game during his team event at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., on June 20 and became the first bowler in USBC Open Championships history with three 300s on the championship lanes. The 43-year-old right-hander also had 300s at the 1996 event in Salt Lake City and 2005 tournament in Baton Rouge, La. His effort this year marked the 30th perfect game in 2013 and 800th in the event's 110-year history.

The 20-year-old right-hander passed Team USA member John Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda, N.Y., who set the bar April 21 with a 789 set. Szczerbinski (r.) leads Regular All-Events with 2,228.

New Mexico bowler Eric Espinda breaks triplicate record at USBC Open Championships

Two-hander Chris Schuch rolls 25th perfect game at National Bowling Stadium

2013USBCOCEricEspinda_small.jpgEric Espinda (pictured) of Albuquerque, N.M., rolled the highest triplicate in 110 years of USBC Open Championships competition June 5 on the way to an 837 series at the NBS in Reno, Nev. The 29-year-old right-hander struck 30 times during his team event, and his trio of 279 games tops Kevin Shafer and Gary Exner Jr., who previously held the triplicate record with 248. Espinda added 719 in singles and 627 in doubles for a 2,183 total, which is third overall this year.

California bowler rolls 24th perfect game of the 110th USBC Open Championships

Larry Rumple (pictured) of Malibu, Calif., finished his team event at the National Bowling Stadium on May 30 with the 24th perfect game of the 2013 USBC Open Championships. The 66-year-old right-hander started with games of 183 and 202 before firing 12 consecutive strikes for a 685 series. Three months of competition at the 2013 USBC Open Championships are in the books, and there have also been a dozen 299s and one 298, while 22 other bowlers have thrown 11 strikes in a row.

New doubles leaders emerge at USBC Open Championships

(l-r), claimed the Regular Doubles lead at the USBC Open Championships with a 1,440 total May 21 at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev. Burkhardt, a 39-year-old right-hander, picked up the 3-4-6-7 split in the ninth frame, and Gatlin closed with seven strikes to lift the pair past Alex Aguiar of Dartmouth, Mass., and Brian LeClair of Albany, N.Y., who previously held the lead with 1,422.

USBC Hall of Famer Jimmy Schroeder celebrates 65 years at USBC Open Championships

The 83-year-old right-hander has traveled thousands of miles and overcome health challenges, including three major hip surgeries, to keep his consecutive streak intact, and he made his 65th straight appearance May 18-19 at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev.

The 49-year-old right-hander rolled games of 224, 289 and 300 for an 813 series at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., and helped Ace Mitchell of Kent, Ohio, to games of 1,030, 1,149 and 1,237 for a 3,416 team total, which is just outside the top 10 in Regular Team. Lodge Lanes Too of Orlando, Fla., leads with a record score of 3,538.

The 25-year-old right-hander finished with games of 279, 269 and 241 for a 789 singles series and had 777 in team and 662 in doubles for a 2,228 all-events total. Scott Pohl of Burnsville, Minn., and Blaine Weninger of Clackamas, Ore., rolled the 10th and 11th perfect games this year.

Past champion John Janawicz grabs All-Events lead at USBC Open Championships

The 40-year-old right-hander had a 752 series in the Team event on Tuesday and returned to the National Bowling Stadium on Wednesday and added 741 in singles and 676 in doubles for a 2,169 all-events total.

He and Chris Greene grabbed the lead in Regular Doubles with 1,403, and their effort lifted Team Tilt of Lawrence, Kan., into the top spot in Team All-Events with a 10,065 total.
