Illinois youth coach John Dill to receive David Dahms Coach of the Year Award

2013JohnDahmCotYJohnDill_small.jpg John Dill of Wheaton, Ill., has been selected to receive the 2013 David Dahms Coach of the Year Award by the United States Bowling Congress Youth Committee. Named in honor of the youth bowling leader instrumental in the creation of what now is known as the Junior Gold program, the David Dahms award recognizes a coach who has been actively involved in a USBC Youth program and has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to coaching, sportsmanship and knowledge of USBC Youth rules.

Stephen Padilla earns USBC Gold-level coaching status

2012USBCGoldCoachStephenPadilla_small.jpgStephen Padilla (pictured) of Mansfield, Texas, has logged more than a decade of experience as a certified bowling coach and recently reached the pinnacle of his field by earning Gold-level coaching status from the USBC Coaching Certification and Development department. Padilla, 36, is a USBC Coaching Specialist at the International Bowling Campus in Arlington, and his primary responsibilities are organizing and conducting Silver certification classes.

Bowling Coaches Hall of Fame to induct Gordon Vadakin

2012CoachesHoFGordonVadakin_small.jpgWichita State University (WSU) Head Bowling Coach Gordon Vadakin (pictured) has been chosen as the 2012 inductee into the Bowling Coaches Hall of Fame. Vadakin joins previous inductees Dick Ritger, Tom Kouros, John Jowdy, and Fred Borden in bowling's newest Hall of Fame. Only one coach is honored yearly among bowling's active coaches; but coaches from bowling's rich history who are deceased or retired are also recognized in the Trailblazers category. This year's Trailblazer inductees are Joe Wilman and LaVerne Carter.

USA Bowling Coaching to offer seminars on coaching youths

USBCCoachingLogo.jpgFor youth bowling coaches, volunteers or parents of children involved in the sport, USA Bowling will provide coaching seminars designed to teach basic bowling coaching skills. The USA Bowling Coaching program already has scheduled 52 seminars throughout the country this fall, and additional seminars will be added. The seminars are a continuation of the program started last year that drew more than 1,100 participants. The seminars are free, are three hours in length and include on-lane and classroom instruction.

USBC Coaching adds Registered Volunteer Program to certification process

Background screening program to help provide a safe environment for USBC Youth members

USBCCoachingLogo.jpgBeginning this fall, coaches seeking certification at any level through USBC will have to be approved through the Registered Volunteer Program (RVP). The USBC Coaching Certification and Development team also announced that current coaches will need to be approved through RVP as part of their continuing education process. Under the new guidelines that take effect Aug. 1, 2012, new coaching candidates will have to be approved through RVP prior to becoming certified.

Fresno State coach Preble, USBC's Bohanan finalists for USOC awards

Fresno State men's bowling coach Chris Preble (l.) is a finalist for Volunteer Coach of the Year and, for the second consecutive year, Nicholas Bohanan (r.), the sports performance specialist for USBC, has been named a finalist for the Doc Counsilman Science Award.

USBC Coaching creates first regional development facilities

Kegel Training Center, Turbo Tech are the first industry partners to sign on

USBCCoachingLogo.jpgIn an effort to provide a more economical way for coaches and bowlers to have access to certification conferences, the United States Bowling Congress has announced it will create USBC Coaching Regional Development Facilities. The facilities will offer regionalized coaching certification conferences, which will cut down on travel costs for coaches across the country. The Kegel Training Center in Lake Wales, Fla., and Turbo Tech in Chesterfield, Mich., are the first industry partners to sign on.

Danish national team trains at International Training and Research Center

Reigning Men's and Women's European Team Champion becomes first European team to train at the ITRC

2010ITRC_small.jpgWith the top training tools and evaluation systems in the world, the International Training and Research Center has attracted national teams from across the globe. Now one of Europe's leading bowling programs has joined the growing list of nations using the ITRC as a temporary training home. Denmark is the reigning men's and women's European team champion and both teams decided to make the trip to Arlington, Texas. They are the first European team to train at the ITRC.

Michael Nyitray named U.S. Olympic Committee Developmental Coach of the Year

2010USOCDevelopmentalCotYMichaelNyitray_small.jpgUSBC Gold coach Michael Nyitray (pictured) of Parkland, Fla., has been named the United States Olympic Committee 2010 Developmental Coach of the Year, giving the sport of bowling its first national coaching award from USOC. U.S. Olympic and Pan American sports organizations selected their 2010 Coaches of the Year as part of the USOC Coach of the Year Recognition Program. The finalists in each category were chosen by a panel of coaching and sport education professionals.

International Training and Research Center now offers membership packages

Three levels currently are offered through the ITRC Membership Program.

USA Bowling Teaching Kids Instructional Seminars to be launched nationwide

New program to teach volunteers how to coach young bowlers

USABowlingCoachingLogo_small.jpgThe International Bowling Campus (IBC) Youth Development team will facilitate dozens of coaching seminars across the nation later this year designed to teach parents and volunteers basic bowling coaching skills. The seminars are part of a YES Fund initiative to develop a new mainstream competition model for youth bowling. The seminars will be open to volunteers from Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA) member centers or United States Bowling Congress (USBC) associations at no cost.

New Yorker is first winner in Team USA Fantasy Camp contest

2011FCMikeReed_small.jpgUnited States Bowling Congress Sport Bowling member Mike Reed (pictured) of Honeoye, N.Y., became the first bowler to win an expenses-paid trip to the International Training and Research Center in the Team USA Fantasy Camp contest. In a fan vote on BOWL.com, Reed topped three other finalists to win the trip by totaling 6,102 votes. Terrell Peterson of Killeen, Texas, finished with 4,219 votes, Aaron Koch of Grand Rapids, Mich., had 913 votes and Jeffrey Owens of Ithaca, N.Y., had 430 votes.

Two bowling coaches are finalists for USOC Coach of the Year awards

2011USOCLogo_small.jpgThe U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) announced that Nicholas Bohanan, the Sports Performance Specialist for the United States Bowling Congress, and Michael Nyitray, a USBC Gold coach who has received multiple national coaching awards, are finalists for the 2011 USOC Coach of the Year awards. U.S. Olympic and Pan American sports organizations selected their 2010 Coaches of the Year as part of the USOC Coach of the Year Recognition Program. The winners in each category will be announced on June 24.

Carolyn Dorin-Ballard named USBC Director of Coaching

A USBC Board member and four-time Team USA member, Dorin-Ballard will shift roles and start in her new position March 1. The 46-year-old USBC Silver coach most recently served as a member of Brunswick's professional teaching staff,.

USBC Coaching launches re-certification, continuing education programs

USBCCoachingLogo.jpgThe United States Bowling Congress launched a new program Tuesday to begin re-certifying coaches and introduced a continuing education program to help keep them informed about the latest technology and coaching techniques. The program will require USBC Gold, Silver and Bronze coaches who were certified prior to Jan. 1, 2006 to take an online certification test to maintain their status. Level I and II coaches do not have to be re-certified.

Illinois coach Steve Lawson named Kerm Helmer Horizon Award winner

The award is named for the longtime bowling coach at Erie Community College to recognize leaders in the youth bowling community who have displayed the courage, determination and ability to develop far-reaching programs of national scope that provide fun and exciting opportunities.

National teams find success after training at ITRC

Teams from the Dominican Republic and Singapore found success in major events after training at the ITRC, located at the International Bowling Campus in Arlington. The ITRC is a joint venture of the United States Bowling Congress and the Bowling Proprietors Association of America.

USBC brings Bronze coaching certification course to Italy

The USBC furthered its partnership with the Italian Sport Bowling Federation (FISB) this month when 40 coaches attended bronze-level coaching certification courses in the cities of Asti, Bologna and Rome. The courses were open to competitive bowlers looking to broaden their knowledge of the sport as well as Italian bowling instructors and FISB members wishing to earn Bronze-level certification. USBC Director of International Relations Bill Hoffman teamed with USBC Gold coach Frank Buffa (pictured left with a student) on the trip.
