Frank and Melanie Börner finish 1, 2 in 34th Grand Prix Zurich

2011GPZTop3_small.jpgQualifying leader Frank Börner (center) and his wife Melanie (l.) finished the 34th Grand Prix Zurich atop the leaderboard Sunday June 5 at Bowling Center BeSeCo in Rümikon, Switzerland. The former German national team member and national champion averaged 248.71 for seven games in the final Round of 14 to cruise to the title with 116 point total. Melanie Börner was second with 100 points with Tanya Cuva (r.), Germany in third with 99 points.

Börner toppled 2005 pins including the tournamen's first 300 game. Trailing Börner by 131 pins was Carlo Greulich, Germany, with Andreas Bösiger (r.), Switzerland, in third with 1822 total including one pin handicap each game.

Daniel (left) and Martin (right) used the tournament's high game of 289 to lead the squad and to move into second and third place in the overall qualifying standings with 1771 and 1759. Squad 1 leader Bruno Hediger held on to the lead with 1776.

Bruno Hediger (l.) had a 1624 scratch series and added 19 pins handicap each game to overtake the early lead in the tournament with 1776 total. Hediger holds a 39-pin lead over second-place Adi Maridas (r.), who had the highest scratch series with 1729 and added eight pins handicap for 1737.

Norwegian Svein Ă…ke Ek wins Ă–IS International for first career Super Six Tour title

2011SSST03SveinAkeEk2_small.jpg22-year-old Norwegian Svein Ă…ke Ek (pictured) defeated Mattias Wetterberg, Sweden, in the title match of Ă–IS International in Gothenburg, Sweden, 258-179, to claim his first title on the Swedish Super Six Tour. The young Norwegian, who has won his first major international title in the 2010 European Champions Cup in Ankara, Turkey, received 40.000 Swedish Kronor for the victory (approx. $6,590). Wetterberg was consoled with 25.000 SEK.

In the title match, Leandersson easily defeated No. 1 seed Lars Pejstrup (left), 253-152, to secure the title and the 40.000 Swedish Kronor or approximately 6,630 U.S. Dollar.

Dominic Barrett wins his third career Irish Open Tenpin Bowling Championships

Aussie Cassie Staudinger goes wire-to-wire to win women's division

Barrett, the 2010 European Bowling Tour ranking champion, captured his third career IO title after 2008 and 2008 and a runner-up finish in 2009. Staudinger, a member of the Australian women's national team, became just the second bowler from the Asian Bowling Federation to win the women's division.

The multiple World and European champion recently was awarded a medal completely different to those he has received in the past. Leandersson became the second recipient of the Magnus Johnson Medal, an annual award which has been established by the former Swedish national team coach Magnus Johnson (r.).

The tournament was the first stop of the 2011 Swedish Super Six Tour. In the title match, Barrett defeated hometown favorite and defending champion Tomas Leandersson, 224-217. Rebecka Larsen Jr. and Mikael Roos, both Sweden, won the women's and men's finals of the 2010 Swedish Super Six Tour.

The two-handerd PBA champion had a 1467 six-game series on Jan. 1st to lead the field of now 297 players from 14 countries.Petri Lehtonen (r.) led Squad 7 and Thursday's qualifying with 1396 to jump into seventh place. Qualifying continues on Friday with Squads 10-12.

Swedish Bowling Federation signs multi-year contracts with three Swedish coaches

The Swedish Bowling Federation has announced that it has signed Leandersson as men's coach and Ljung as women's coach through the 2013 Combined World Championships. Eva Larsson (r.) will serve as youth national team coach until 2012.

Dennis Eklund selected Swedish Bowler of the Year 2010

Eklund had an outstanding first six months in the year 2010 when he captured a total of four titles including the prestigious national championships. "It is an honor to be selected bowler of the year in Sweden as the competition is very tough," Eklund said. "2010 was the best year in my career. The streak I had during the first half was unbelievable."

The long-time Swedish international, a multiple world and European champion, who is now the head coach of the Swedish national team, won three consecutive matches to win the Kulladal Super Six at Baltiska Bowling Center in Malmö, Sweden. In the title match Leandersson, seeded third, topped tournament leader, Mattias Wetterberg, 234-217, to seal the victory.

PBA Hall of Famer Brian Voss (r.), United States, was 22 pins behind in second place with 1311.

Simut had led the field with 1254 pinfall total and an average of 209. Long-time Greek international Takis Karetsos (pictured) was second with 1234 followed by Florian Mihailescu and Romeo Gagenoiu, both Romania, with 1218 and 1216, resp. The top 4 of the squads conducted until Thursday, who will not finish among the top 18 in the overall qualifying standings, will be awarded a wildcard for the finals on Sunday.

Jo Cundy shoots big game to win English Open from top seed

2010EnglishOpenJoCundy_small.jpgLong-time England international Jo Cundy (pictured with the trophy) won her first major event, becoming the 2010 English Open champion Sunday Nov. 21 at Lakeside Superbowl Nuneaton in Nuneaton, England. The five-player stepladder final was an All-English affair. Cundy, who was one of three women in the stepladder, was the No. 1 seed and watched the first three games from the sidelines. In the title match Cundy defeated fellow national team member Zara Giles, 257-219, to wrap up the title.

Europe's Palermaa, Koivuniemi, Moor, Barrett retain 11th Weber Cup

Defeat U.S. Team after 30 matches, 17-13, for fifth victory

2010WeberCupTeamEurope_small.jpgTeam Europe's Osku Palermaa, Mika Koivuniemi (both Finland), Paul Moor and Dominic Barrett (both England) retained the 11th Weber Cup holding off a come backing U.S. Team featuring Tim Mack, Chris Barnes, Tommy Jones and Pete Weber to record a 17-13 victory, the fifth for Europe in the 11 year history of the competition. It was down to lPaul Moor to bring the trophy home for the Europeans and he lsealed the victory with 265-190 win over Pete Weber.

Team Europe maintains four-point lead after trading wins in fourth session at Weber Cup

2010WeberCupLogo_small.jpg Team Europe maintained their four-point lead after the fourth session in the 11th Weber Cup at  Barnsley Metrodome. The session was shared three matches each which means the Europeans need three points for victory while the USA must win seven to win the competition. The final match of the session turned out to be the best of the Weber Cup to date as Palermaa & Moor, defated Weber & Mack, 39-28, in roll-off after a 278-278 tie.
