Another first for Liz Johnson, wins Viernheim Open and 25.000 Euro

2006EBT16ChampionLizJohnson_small.jpg Liz Johnson (left), Cheektowaga, N.Y., defeated Yoan Alix from France, two-games-to-one in the championship match of the 2nd Gutperle Viernheim Open 2006 presented by Storm to become the first American woman to win a European Bowling Tour tournament. Johnson pocketed the huge 25.000 Euro first-place check (approx. $31,700), while Yoan Alix was consoled with 12.500. Euro. Sean Rash, United States received 5.500 Euro for finishing third.

Yoan Alix leads top 40 into single-elimination match play finals in Viernheim Open

2006EBT15YoanAlix_small.jpg Yoan Alix from France shot a huge 1949 eight-game series, an average of 243,63, to become the No. 1 seed for Sunday's finals in the 2nd Gutperle Viernheim Open presented by Storm. The top 40 qualified for the single-elimination best-of-three-games match play finals on Sunday starting at 8am. The top 8 semi-final leaders will bypass the first two rounds. The winner will walk away with the huge 25.000 Euro first-place check (approx. $31,700).

Belmonte and Johnson win qualifying in 2nd Gutperle Viernheim Open

Six players crack top 58 in final qualifying squad

2006MWCJasonBelmonte_small.jpg Jason Belmonte of Australia won the qualifying in Viernheim for the second consecutive year, worth 2.500 Euro. Belmonte led the field of 372 players from 27 countries with 1463 six-game total. Liz Johnson was the top-ranked woman in second place with 1440 to receive a 1.000 Euro bonus, Amanda Beck, both United States, who led Squad 29 with 1437, came up three pins short to finish third. Surviving the one-game Desperado Squad were: 1. Carsten Grieving, GER, 258 2. Uwe Tscharke, GER, 246 3. Amedeo Spada, ITA, 243 4. Rhys Parfitt, ENG, 238 5. Habib Dogan, TUR, 235 6. Andreas Boesiger, SUI, 230.

Belmonte leads Viernheim Open Qualifying before the finals squad

The Aussie, who won the qualifying last year, led the field of 369 players with 1463 six-game total and an average of 243,83. Former PWBA champion Liz Johnson, USA, was the top-ranked woman in second place with 1440 including the standard 48 pins handicap.

Peter Ljung (left) from Sweden continued to lead with 1419. 23-time PBA champion Brian Voss started the 23rd squad with a bang. The PBA Hall of Famer rolled 12 consecutive strikes for the second 300-game of the tournament. Video Clip with the last two strikes available now.

Mack and Voss crack top ten in Viernheim Open

Swede Robert Andersson shoots first 300-game of the tournament

Mack felled 1375 pins to move into fifth place. Voss is 24 pins behind in 7th place. Rainer Puisis from Germany continued to lead with 1404. 2006USBCQueensLizJohnson_small.jpg Rainer Puisis from Germany and former PWBA champion Liz Johnson, United States, moved into first and second place in the qualifying of the 2nd Gutperle Viernheim Open 2006 presented by STORM on Tuesday. Puisis overtook the lead with 1404 pinfall total, while Johnson (pictured left), the first woman to appear in a PBA championship round, is second with 1394 pinfall total including 48 pins handicap.

GrÀber takes commanding lead in 2nd Gutperle Viernheim Open

Christian_Graber_4686.jpg Christian Gräber of Germany overtook the lead in the qualifying of the 2nd Gutperle Viernheim Open 2006 Monday evening. After a slow start with 198, Gräber posted scores of 228, 209, 269, 267 and 221 to finish the six-game series with 1392 pinfall total and an average of 232,00. He holds a commanding lead over previous leader Martina Beckel, who is 64 pins behind in second place with 1328.

Women set high scores on first two days at Viernheim Open

2006EBT15ViernheimLogo.jpg 131 players took the lanes at Bowling Center Viernheim during the first eight of 29 qualifying squads in the 2nd Gutperle Viernheim Open 2006 presented by STORM, the richest event on the European Bowling Tour. Three of the 17 women in the field, Martina Beckel, Germany, Ivonne Gross, Austria and Kirsten Horemans, Belgium posted the high scores on the first two days.

Michael Koch from Germany has set the pace with 1295 six-game total and an average of 215,83. As about 70 (!) players have cancelled their participation during the last week, there might be some qualifying spots available on the final weekend.
