Jones, Kulick BWAA Top Bowlers

2006KellyKulick_small.jpg 2006TommyJones_small.jpg Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C. and Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J. have been voted male and female Bowlers of the Year for calendar year 2006 by the members of the Bowling Writers Association of America. The announcement was made Jan. 19 by BWAA President Hazel McLeary of Victoria, B.C.

Hazel Mcleary elected President of "new" BWAA

Hazel_McLeary_5225.jpg Hazel McLeary, long-time communications director for the Canadian Tenpin Bowling Federation, begins her one-year term Jan. 1, 2007 as president of the "new" Bowling Writers Association of America, which begins operations on that date. The "new" BWAA is the result of a merger of the National Women Bowling Writers and the "old" BWAA, and will continue operations under BWAA's established name.

P.J. Haggerty, Anita Manns selected 2005 BWAA Collegiate Bowlers of the Year

Haggerty and Wichita State University senior Anita Manns as the 2005 male and female Collegiate Bowlers of the Year. Manns and Haggerty also were honored as Most Valuable Players for the 2004-05 collegiate bowling season by the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association.

Shannon Pluhowsky and John Janawicz selected as BWAA Amateur Bowlers of the Year

Shannon_Pluhowsky_4981.jpgTraveling different paths, Shannon Pluhowsky and John Janawicz were selected as the Amateur Bowlers of the Year by the Bowling Writers Association of America. "While Shannon's achievements were spread through the international bowling scene the entire year," explained Chairperson Bill Zuben. "John's record-breaking performance at last year's ABC National Championship Tournament earned him the recognition."

BWAA delegates vote to hold 2006 Convention in Las Vegas

BWAA.jpg Bowling Writers Association of America (BWAA) delegates voted to move the organization's annual convention on a one-year trial to Bowl Expo in Las Vegas, Nev., in June 2006. Offers to conduct future BWAA meetings came from the Bowling Proprietors Association of America, which hosts Bowl Expo, and the newly created United States Bowling Congress, which will meet in April 2006 in Orlando, Fla.

Bowling writers honor Kietz, Woodruff, Marchione

BWAALogo_small.jpg Veteran writer Frank Kietz, retired AMF executive R.R. "Woody" Woodruff and deaf bowling communications pioneer Connie Marchione were honored here March 16 during the 2005 Bowling Writers Association of America convention. All of the award winners were elected by a national ballot of BWAA members.

Bob Glass, Shirley Levens named BWAA Senior Bowlers of the Year

Kansas, Florida competitors extend streaks

Bob_Glass_5009.jpgBob Glass and Shirley Levens were voted 2004 Senior Bowlers of the Year by a select committee of the Bowling Writers Association of America. Glass (pictured) earned the men's honor for the fifth consecutive year as a result of his solid record on the Professional Bowlers Association Senior Tour. Levens, gained the ladies' nod for the third year in a row.

Walter Ray Williams Jr. and Shannon Pluhowsky elected BWAA Bowlers of the Year

Walter Ray Williams Jr.Walter Ray Williams Jr. (pictured) and amateur Shannon Pluhowsky have been voted 2004 Bowlers of the Year by the Bowling Writers Association of America. It was the record eighth time and the third consecutive year Williams has been honored by the BWAA voters. In the absence of a professional women's bowling tour, Pluhowsky topped former PWBA star Carolyn Dorin-Ballard in the women's election to add yet another award to her impressive list.
