Oregon's Bryon Smith wins PBA Regional Players Invitational

Former PBA Tour exempt player earns "Elite" berth in $1 million PBA Tournament of Champions

2010PBARPIBryonSmith2_small.jpgBryon Smith (l.) of Roseburg, Ore., dominated the match play finals Thursday to win the Sands Regency PBA Regional Players Invitational at the National Bowling Stadium. Smith, a former PBA Tour exempt player posted an 11-5 match play record for a 37-game total of 8,290 pins, including match play bonus pins, for a 25-pin victory over Tom Hess of Urbandale, Iowa. Seven players earned exemptions to bowl on the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour during the 2011-12 season.

Chicago's Jason Wojnar leads PBA Regional Players Invitational after three rounds

Field has been cut to 16 players for Thursday's match play

2010PBARPIJasonWojnar_small.jpgTwo-time PBA regional titlist Jason Wojnar (l.) of Chicago, moved into the lead after three rounds of the Sands Regency PBA Regional Players Invitational Wednesday at the National Bowling Stadium. Wojnar finished the 21-game preliminaries with a 4,704 21-game pinfall (224 average). The 87-player field that features PBA's top regional and senior players has been cut to the top 16 who will bowl two eight-game round robin match play rounds on Thursday to determine the final standings.

Arizona's Steven Black holds first round lead in PBA Regional Players Invitational

2010PBARPIStevenBlack_small.jpg2010PBASouthwestTylerJensen_small.jpgFive-time PBA regional titlist Steven Black (l.) of Phoenix, averaged 239.8 to take the first round lead in the 42nd Sands Regency PBA Regional Players Invitational Tuesday at the National Bowling Stadium. Black bowled a 1,679 seven-game pinfall to hold a 37-pin lead over Tyler Jensen (r.) of Fort Worth, Texas, in second with 1,642. The entire 87-player field will bowl two more seven-game qualifying rounds Wednesday to cut to the top 16.

Elite berth in PBA Tournament of Champions at stake in Regional Players Invitational

PBA's top regional competitors will also compete for 2011-12 PBA Tour exemptions

PBA1958Logo_mini.jpgAmong the Professional Bowlers Association's nearly 3,500 regional competitors, winning the Sands Regency PBA Regional Players Invitational ranks high on the wish list. The 42nd annual RPI will feature 84 of the country's top regional players representing PBA's East, South, Central, Southwest, Midwest, West and Northwest Regions who qualified for the event by finishing in the top 25 in points of their respective regions and – for the first time – to PBA Senior players who finished in the top five in points in senior events or who qualified in special senior regional qualifying events.

Regional qualifying completed for end-of-season Dick Weber PBA Playoffs

108 regional qualifiers will join top 72 PBA Tour points leaders in Indianapolis

PBA1958Logo_small_0.jpgRegional qualifying has been completed and the top 18 players in six PBA Regional "pods" have been determined for the end-of-season Dick Weber PBA Playoffs which will be held March 9-13, 2011 at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis. The new Dick Weber PBA Playoffs will feature a total of 108 PBA members who have qualified through their respective Regional programs, along with the top 72 players on the 2010-11 PBA Tour competition points list.

PBA Regional players begin pursuit of remaining berths in Dick Weber PBA Playoff

Eight qualifying spots in each of six PBA Regional programs remain open for end-of-season event

PBA1958Logo_mini.jpgProfessional Bowlers Association Regional competitors will begin a two-month chase for berths in the new end-of-season Dick Weber PBA Playoffs this weekend, beginning with PBA Regional tournaments in Camp LeJeune, N.C., and Tumwater, Wash. Over the course of the ensuing 60 days, regional competitors across the U.S. will pursue competition points in weekend tournaments scheduled within the PBA's seven regions. On the schedule for the Oct. 8-10 weekend are regional events in Lancaster, Pa.; Richmond, Ind.; Springfield, Mo., and Tucson, Ariz.

Reno's Sands Regency to host 2010 PBA Regional Players Invitational

"Elite" berth in $1 million 2011 PBA Tournament of Champions awaits the winner

2010PBARPISandsRegency_small.jpgAmong the Professional Bowlers Association's nearly 3,500 regional competitors, winning the Sands Regency PBA Regional Players Invitational ranks high on the wish list. But winning the 2010 edition at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., Dec. 13-16 means an automatic berth in the "Elite" field for the 2011 PBA Tournament of Champions and a shot at a $250,000 prize. The PBA Regional Players Invitational offers a $6,000 first prize (based on 80 entries).

Johnny Petraglia wins PBA East Region Howell Lanes Senior Open

Joins Dick Weber as second player with PBA Titles in six decades

2010PBASJohnnyPetraglia2_small.jpgPBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia (pictured) of Jackson, N.J., defeated David Kneas of Annapolis, Md., 245-189, to win the PBA East Region Howell Lanes Senior Open at Howell Lanes Sunday, and join the legendary Dick Weber as only the second player to win PBA titles in six decades. Petraglia won the first of his 14 PBA Tour titles in Fort Smith, Ark., in 1966 at age 19. With Sunday's title, he also has 12 PBA Regional titles along with seven PBA Senior Tour titles.

Riga Kalfas revives game to win PBA Regional Players Championship

Earns berth in the $1 million PBA Tournament of Champions 2011

2010PBARPCRigaKalfas_small.jpgRiga Kalfas (pictured) of Florence, Ky., revived his game just in time to win the PBA Regional Players Championship at Thunderbowl Lanes Monday. Kalfas, a 42-year-old truck driver by day and bowling pro shop operator by night, defeated Chris Collins of Savannah, Ga., 236-216, to complete a near-perfect day and claim the $7,500 first prize along with a guaranteed berth in the 2011 PBA Tournament of Champions, a record $1 million event with a $250,000 first prize. Coming into the Detroit area event, however, Kalfas was on the brink of giving up the game.

Van Hees, White lead top 32 into match play at PBA Regional Players Championship

Van Hees averaged 231.12 for 16 qualifying games, topping the field of 172 non-exempt PBA members with a total of 3,698 pins. White finished with a 3,607 total, The field was cut to the top 32 for Monday’s single-elimination match play finals.

Jonathan Van Hees holds PBA Regional Players Championship first round lead

PBAJonathanVanHees_small.jpgJonathan Van Hees (pictured) of Charlestown, R.I., averaged 237 to take the first round lead in the Professional Bowlers Association Regional Players Championship at Thunderbowl Lanes Saturday by 44 pins over Matt White of Warren, Pa. Van Hees finished the first eight qualifying games with a total of 1,896 pins. White had a 1,852 total. The field of 172 non-exempt PBA members will bowl another eight games Sunday, after which the field will be cut to the top 64 for single-elimination match play competition on Monday.

2009PBATTJoeCiccone_small.jpgWinning the 2009 PBA Regional Players Championship at Thunderbowl Lanes in suburban Detroit, became a life-changing experience for Joe Ciccone (pictured) of Buffalo, N.Y. Along with the RPC title, Ciccone earned his first trip to the PBA Tournament of Champions, an $8,000 prize and a boost in confidence that helped him also regain his Tour exemption the following week in the PBA Tour Trials. The PBA Regional Players Championship returns to Thunderbowl May 28-31 at Thunderbowl as a stand-alone event.

"Star of Tomorrow" Andrew Koff wins PBA South Regional event

Miami teen tops field of PBA stars to win in Jupiter, Florida

2010SoTAndrewKoff_small.jpgTwo days after graduating from Miami's Gulliver Prep High School, 18-year-old Andrew Koff of Miami defeated David Boyd of Coconut Creek, Fla., 243-199, to win the Professional Bowlers Association South Region's Jupiter Lanes Open Sunday. Koff, competing as an amateur, will receive the $2,500 first prize in the form of scholarship money deposited into his United States Bowling Congress SMART account. He will not receive formal credit for winning a PBA title, nor will he become eligible for the 2011 PBA Tournament of Champions, because of his amateur status.

Professional Bowlers Association announces 2009-10 Regional Tour awards

PBAEst1958_small.jpgThe Professional Bowlers Association has announced the season-ending awards for the 2009-10 PBA Regional Tour season. Each of the seven PBA regions recognized a Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Patterson Award winner. Four regions also recognized a Senior Player of the Year. Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards are voted on by the regional managers and John Weber, Director of the Senior and Regional Tours. The Pat Patterson Awards were selected by the respective regional managers.

RPC will be first step on road to five-stage PBA World Championship

PBA1958Logo_mini.jpgExpanding upon its preview of the 2010-11 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season unveiled a week earlier, the Professional Bowlers Association announced Wednesday it will integrate its 2010 World Series of Bowling into a five-stage PBA World Championship, creating a multi-faceted showcase of bowling to launch the PBA Tour's 52nd season. The road to the World Championship will begin at the PBA Regional Players Championship which returns to Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich., May 28-31.

Scott Norton wins PBA Regional Players Invitational

Top 7 players earn exemptions for the 2010-11 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour

2009RPIScottNorton_small.jpgScott Norton (left) of San Francisco overtook Bobby Hall II of Landover, Md., in the final round to win the Sands Regency PBA Regional Players Invitational at the National Bowling Stadium Thursday. Norton averaged 216 over 30 games for a total of 6,482 pins and a 65-pin cushion over Hall, who had led the previous three rounds. As Sands Regency PBA Regional Players Invitational champion, Norton earned a $7,500 prize and a berth in the 2010 PBA Tournament of Champions in Las Vegas in addition to an exemption to bowl on tour during the 2010-11 season.

Bobby Hall leads PBA Regional Players Invitational into Final Round

Bobby Hall II of Landover, Md., held onto the lead as the Sands Regency PBA Regional Players Invitational headed into its final round Thursday night at the National Bowling Stadium. Hall, who turns 40 in March, averaged 218.8 through 24 games – six games on each on the Professional Bowlers Association's Cheetah, Chameleon, Viper and Scorpion lane conditioning patterns – for a total of 5,252 pins and a 95-pin lead over San Francisco's Scott Norton heading into the Shark round.

Bobby Hall holds on to the lead in PBA Regional Players Invitational after three rounds

PBAEst1958_small.jpg Bobby Hall II of Landover, Md., who jumped into the lead after two rounds of the Sands Regency PBA Regional Players Invitational at the National Bowling Stadium, retained the top spot after the third round of competition. Hall finished the six-game round Wednesday night on the Chameleon oil contioning pattern with an 18-game total of 4,032 pins – a 224 average – and a 69-pin lead over Jeff Zaffino of Warren, Pa. The complete field will bowl two more six-game rounds on the PBA Scorpion and Shark patterns, respectively, Thursday.

Bobby Hall overtakes lead in PBA Regional Players Invitational after two rounds

Hall, who trailed Dave Beres of Waukesha, Wis., by 24 pins after the first six games on the PBA's Cheetah lane conditioning pattern, finished the six-game Viper round Wednesday afternoon with a 12-game total of 2,790 pins – a 232.5 average – and a 46-pin lead over Jeff Zaffino of Warren, Pa.

Dave Beres holds early lead in Regional Players Invitational

235.6 average on Cheetah pattern good for 24-pin edge

PBAEst1958_small.jpgDave Beres of Waukesha, Wis., averaged 235.6 on the Professional Bowlers Association's Cheetah lane condition pattern Tuesday to take the early lead in the Sands Regency Regional Players Invitational at the National Bowling Stadium. Beres held a 24-pin lead over Bobby Hall II of Landover, Md. David Anthony of Austin, Texas, was in third place with 1,367 pins. In addition to a $7,500 first prize and a berth in the 2010 PBA Tournament of Champions for the winner, the players also compete for seven PBA Tour Exemptions for the 2010-11 season.
