Rick Steelsmith top qualifier at USBC Masters

Rick Steelsmith (pictured left) of Wichita, Kan., earned high-qualifier honors Thursday after 15 games at the 2012 Alka Seltzer Plus Liquid Gels United States Bowling Congress Masters.
The 1987 Masters champion finished qualifying with 3,505, an average of 233.6, and will face defending champion and No. 64 seed Tom Hess (right) of Urbandale, Iowa, in the opening round of the double-elimination match-play bracket at Sunset Station's Strike Zone Bowling Center.
Steelsmith, who earned $1,000 for being the top qualifier, finished 76 pins ahead of second-place finisher Wes Malott (below left) of Pflugerville, Texas. Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, finished third with 3,424.

The top 63 players from the final qualifying standings advanced to match play. Two-time champion Walter Ray Williams Jr. (right) of Ocala, Fla., earned the final spot with 3,148, an average of 209.8.
Eight players from the international field survived the cut to match play. Jason Belmonte of Australia was fourth with 3,382 and was followed by fellow PBA champion Stuart Williams, England, who was 13th with 3,344.
17th and 18th place belonged to PBA Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela and Sweden's Martin Larsen with 3,300 and 3,293. PBA exempt player Dan MacLelland, Canada, was 22nd with 3,279.

Asian representatives Wu Siu Hong (left), Hong Kong, and Shigeo Saito, Japan, finished the preliminaries in 31st and 35th place with 3,246 and 3,219, respectively. while Humberto Vazquez of Mexico toppled 3,169 pins, good for 53rd place.
The sole woman in qualifying round 3, USBC Queens champion Missy Parkin (right) of Lake Forest, Calif., totaled 3,222 pins to earn the No. 34 seed for the opening match play round.
Match play begins at 4 p.m. Pacific on Thursday with three rounds of matches on the schedule. By the end of the day, only 32 players will remain in the field and stay alive heading into Friday's match-play rounds.
The final four players who survive double-elimination bracket play will advance to the nationally televised stepladder finals at 12:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. The USBC Masters champion will earn $50,000 with $25,000 going to second place, $15,000 to third place and $10,000 to fourth place.
The USBC Masters is the tenth event of the 2011-12 PBA season and one of four majors on the PBA Tour. The tournament also is the second event of the 2012 World Bowling Tour and one of three tournaments which take place at Sunset Station in Las Vegas in a span of two weeks.
Bowlingdigital will cover the USBC Masters (finals only), the WTBA International Open and The International Mini live from Las Vegas commencing Saturday, Jan. 28 all the way through to the finals on Feb. 5, 2012.
