Etonic PBA Senior U.S. Open: Mike Dias takes first round lead
06/05/12

Mike Dias (pictured left) of Lafayette, Colo., averaged 248 including a perfect game to lead first-round qualifying Monday in the Etonic Professional Bowlers Association Senior U.S. Open at the Suncoast Bowling Center in Las Vegas, Nev.
Dias, who won the PBA Senior Don Carter Open in 2011 for his lone Senior Tour title, had a 1,488 six-game pinfall total with games of 214, 300, 237, 212, 257 and 268. He holds a four-pin lead over Sammy Ventura (right) of Syracuse, N.Y., in second who finished the first round with 1,484. Ventura is trying for his first win in three seasons competing on the Senior Tour.
"You wouldn't know it by the way I've bowled in past U.S. Opens but I actually like these longer-format tournaments," said Dias, whose best Senior U.S. Open finish was 43rd in 2007. "I'm trying to treat it like any other tournament to avoid putting too much pressure on myself.
"It's just one block and there's a long way to go but even after six games I've got a good picture of how the house is playing and just need to get all the pins I can."
Rounding out the top five were three bowlers from the Las Vegas area, amateur Terry Leong of Las Vegas, in third with 1,470, former touring pro Joe Salvemini, also of Las Vegas, in fourth with 1,465, and amateur Dick Baker of Henderson, Nev., in fifth with 1,452.
"I've really been working hard the last three months getting ready for this tournament," said Salvemini, who won three PBA Tour titles in a 20-year career that spanned from 1983 to 2003. "Between practice and some good coaching I've got the hunger back. My confidence was pretty high coming into this tournament."
The Etonic PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Suncoast drew 220 players. In what is considered the toughest test on the Senior Tour, all players will bowl two more six-game qualifying rounds Tuesday and Wednesday. The field will then be cut to the top 55 players for another nine-game qualifying round Thursday morning.
The top 24 players after Thursday's qualifying round will advance to round-robin match play rounds conducted Thursday and Friday to determine the top four for the stepladder finals scheduled for Friday at 3:30 p.m. PT.
