Kang Bo Long, Gloria Yung win their first career ABF Tour title in Hong Kong
06/11/12
Kang Bo Long of Malaysia and Gloria Yung of Hong Kong (pictured left, r-l) won the men's and women's single-elimination playoffs in the Asian Bowling Federation Tour Hong Kong leg to capture their first career ABF Tour title.
Both players saved their best for last. Kang easily won his first two matches with back-to-back 180+ games as his opponents in the Round of 16 and Round of 8, Dhruv Sarda of India and Eric Tseng, Hong Kong, managed 150+ only.
In the semifinal Kang flew past local favorite Wu Siu Hong, Hong Kong, 265-193 and even bettered the score in the final against Fahad Al-Emadi of Qatar, who was looking for back-to-back titles after winning the 38th Hong Kong International Open yesterday. Kang stormed to his first career AFT Tour victory with a huge 278-195 win. Thanks to his third place finish worth 46 ranking points, Wu Siu Hong took over the lead in the ABF Tour point ranking.
Yung ousted Tang Joh Six of Malaysia in the opening match, 202-173, then defeated Hui Tong of Macau, 172-157, and compatriot Chan Shuk Han, 188-165, in low-scoring quarterfinal and semifinal matches.
The women's final was an all-Hong Kong affair with Yung and Cookie Lee squaring off. The match was decided in the final frame. When Lee finished with 211, Yung needed 8-spare-8 in her tenth frame to win by one pin. And that was exactly what she got to claim the title, 212-211.
With the 75 ranking points for her victory, Yung ties Thailand leg winner Yanee Saebae of Thailand for the lead in the women's point ranking after two events.
The ABF Tour will be in Macau next Sunday, June 17, at COTAI International Bowling Center.
The 2012 ABF Tour consists of eighth tournaments - four in the Middle East, all without a women's division, and four in East Asia, all including a women's division.
Bowlers earn ranking points based on how they finish in each event. Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 16 men and top 16 women who will qualify for the Tournament of Champions to be held in 2013.
