Singaporean girls charge to big lead in the first block of the WYC Team event

    Asian countries in control of the leaderboard with Korea second, Chinese Taipei third and Malaysia fourth; Korea's Hwang Yeon-Ju targets gold medal in Girls All Events

    2012WYCGirlsTeamSingapore.jpg2012WYCGirlsTeamKorea.jpgThe first block of the Girls four-player team event at the 12th World Youth Championships ended with the overwhelming presence of Asian teams at the top of the leaderboard at Blu-O Paragon Bowling Center in Bangkok, Thailand.

    The girls from Singapore (pictured left) charged to a big 105-pin lead on the medium oil pattern over defending champion Korea (right) on Friday morning followed by Chinese Taipei in third and Malaysia in fourth place.

    The top four teams after the second block on long oil will advance to playoffs on Sunday, July 1st, with the semifinals starting at 3 p.m. local time.

    Singapore's New Hui Fen, Ilma Nur Jannah, Krishna Darshini and Bernice Lim joined forces to claim the lead in the team event with 2583 total and an average of 215.25 behind games of 854, 834 and 895. Darshini led all 96 girls from 29 countries with 685 (228.33) en route to move into eight place in All Events.

    2012WYCGirlsTeamChineseTaipei.jpg2012WYCGirlsTeamMalaysia.jpgThe South Korean girls with Doubles champion Hwang Yeon-Ju and Kim Seon-Jeong, who also won the title in Singles, and their team mates Kim Ga-Ram and Oh Nuri managed games of 851, 770 and 857 to sit in second place with 2478 (206.50). Hwang led the team with 674 to shoot into the lead in All Events.

    Chinese Taipei's Chen Ya-Chi, Wang Yu-Huei, Yeh Tzu-Yin and Chang Yu-Hsuan (pictured left) posted a score 2400, an average of 200 on the nose, to finish day one of the team preliminaries in third place.

    Sin Li Jane, Hee Kar Yen, Dayang Khairuniza and Jacqueline Sijore of Malaysia (above right) round out the top 4 with 2387 (198.92).

The Asian quartet was followed by two teams from the American Zone, Colombia (left) in fifth place with 2372 and the United States (right) in sixth place with 2338. The best team of the European Zone, England, was in seventh place with 2336.

    There was a bigger gap between England and the host country Thailand in eighth place with 2241. Rounding out the top 10 were Japan and Canada with 2239 and 2206, respectively.

    Hwang Yeon-Ju totaled 3239 pins over 15 games and targets the gold medal in Girls All Events (individual results of the Singles, Doubles and Team preliminaries). The Korean holds a comfortable 95-pin lead over previous leader Jacqueline Sijore of Malaysia, who is second with 3144.

    Places three and four belong to Singapore's New Hui Fen and Ilma Nur Jannah with 3130 and 3123, resp. The only non-Asian players in the top 10 are Juliana Franco of Colombia (5th, 3118) and Danielle McEwan, United States (10th, 3018).

    With 2943 and an average of 196.20, Amanda Greene, United States, holds the 24th and last place to advance to Masters match play, which will conclude the Championships on Monday and Tuesday.

    With 15 of 18 games in the books, players from Asia hold 15 out of the top 24 spots including four each from Korea, Malaysia and Singapore, who have the entire team in the top 24. Another six spots belong to the American zone including four for the United States. The remaining three spots are currently hold by European countries. Diana Zavjalova of Latvia was the best European player in 17th place with 2986.

    The 96 girls will return on Saturday for the second block of the Team event on long oil starting at 9 a.m. local time at Blu-O Paragon Bowling Center in Bangkok, Thailand.

    274 girls and boys from record 48 countries, who must not have reached their 21st birthday on January 1, 2012, will compete will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, four-player Team event, All Events and Masters in the ten-day event.

    The WTBA patterns "Mexico City" and "Atlanta" will be used in Bangkok. The 45-foot Mexico City pattern is the second-longest of the twelve WTBA certified lane pattern (four short, four medium and four long). With a length of 38 feet, the Atlanta pattern is the shortest of the four medium pattern.

    Singles is being played on "Mexico City" and Doubles will be contested on "Atlanta", while the Team event will feature both oil patterns (3 games on each pattern). The Masters will be staged on dual lane condition (one lane dressed with the medium pattern and the other lane dressed with the long pattern).

    The top four players and teams after six games in Singles, Doubles and Team, respectively, will advance to the semifinals. The No. 1 meets No. 4 and No. 2 takes on No. 3. The winners will determine the World Youth Champion, while the losers will share the bronze medal. All matches are single-game matches.
