Swedish boys take commanding lead as WYC Boys Team event reaches halfway mark

    Germany, United States and Korea round out the top four after three games on medium oil; Basil Low (SIN), Marshall Kent (USA), Sam Cooley (AUS) atop the All Events leaderboard after 15/18 games

    2012WYCBoysTeamSweden.jpgSweden (pictured left) took a commanding 117-pin lead in the Boys Team event at the 12th WYC in Thailand after the first block of three games on the medium oil pattern Friday at Blu-O Paragon Bowling Center in Bangkok.

    2012WYCBoysTeamGermany.jpgDoubles bronze medalist Kim Bolleby and Magnus Johnson Jr. and their team mates Daniel Fransson and Johan Helldén led B Squad with 2631 total (219.25) to lead the field of 42 countries, which have sent a full team of four players, into the second block on long oil Saturday. Only the top 4 teams will advance to Sunday's playoffs for the medals.

    The Swedes got off to a great start with 905 and 951 and closed out the set with 775. Fransson led the team with 722 (240.67) and was followed by Hellden (661), Bolleby and Johnson (both 624).

    2012WYCBoysTeamUSA.jpg2012WYCBoysTeamKorea.jpgThe Swedes outaveraged A Squad leader Germany (above right) by almost 10 pins. Andre Schröder, Dominic Buchmann, Christian Birlinger and Tobias Börding slipped to second place with 2514 (209.50).

    Junior Team USA's Andrew Koff Zack Hattori Chris Via and Singles champion Marshall Kent (pictured left) fell to third with 2512 (209.33). Rounding out the top 4 after the first day of the Team preliminaries was defending WYC Team champion Korea (right) with Doubles champions Kim Yeon-Sang, Hwang Dong-Jun and Ryu Ji-Hoon and Kim Ju-Young at 2478 (206.50).

    Rounding out the top 10 were another four teams of Squad B. New Zealand (left) was second to Sweden with 2447, good for seventh place overall. Puerto Rico (right) eight with 2436 followed by France and Hong Kong, both with 2422.

    2012WYCBasilLow.jpg2012WYCMarshallKent.jpgWith three more games to go in the Team event, Basil Low (left) of Singapore continued to lead the 178 boys from 47 countries in All Events (combined results of the Singles, Doubles and Team preliminaries) with 3338 and an average of 222.53 for 15 games.

    Low, who leads the field since the Singles preliminaries, has 40-pin cushion over Singles champion Marshall Kent (right) of the United States, who is second with 3298. Sam Cooley (below left) of Australia remained in third place with 3261.

    2012WYCSamCooley.jpg2012WYCAndrewKoff.jpgThe best European player, Christian Birlinger of Germany, is mere one pin off the pace for the All Events medals in fourth with 3274. 2010 WYC All Events champion Andrew Koff (right), United States, currently holds the 24th and last place to advance to Masters match play with 3074 (204.93).

    The Swedes are the only team that has all four players among the top 24, three are from the U.S. and two each from Canada and Korea. Another 13 countries are currently represented by one player. Eight of the 17 countries in the top 24 are from Asia, six from Europe and three from America.

    The 178 boys - divided into two squads - will return on Saturday for the second block of the Team event on long oil starting at 1 and 5 p.m. local time at Blu-O Paragon Bowling Center in Bangkok, Thailand.

    2012WYCLogo.jpg 12th World Youth Championships takes place at Blu-O Paragon Bowling Center in Bangkok, Thailand, from June 22 - July 3, 2012.

    274 girls and boys from record 48 countries, who must not have reached their 21st birthday on January 1, 2012, will compete will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, four-player Team event, All Events and Masters in the ten-day event.

    The WTBA patterns "Mexico City" and "Atlanta" will be used in Bangkok. The 45-foot Mexico City pattern is the second-longest of the twelve WTBA certified lane pattern (four short, four medium and four long). With a length of 38 feet, the Atlanta pattern is the shortest of the four medium pattern.

    Singles is being played on "Mexico City" and Doubles will be contested on "Atlanta", while the Team event will feature both oil patterns (3 games on each pattern). The Masters will be staged on dual lane condition (one lane dressed with the medium pattern and the other lane dressed with the long pattern).

    The top four players and teams after six games in Singles, Doubles and Team, respectively, will advance to the semifinals. The No. 1 meets No. 4 and No. 2 takes on No. 3. The winners will determine the World Youth Champion, while the losers will share the bronze medal. All matches are single-game matches.
