USA's Marshall Kent takes over lead in Boys Masters in Round of 24

    American targets his third gold medal of the Championships; leads top 8 into Tuesday's Round Robin Match Play

    2012WYCBoysAEMarshallKent.jpg2012WYCBoysAESamCooley.jpgMarshall Kent of the United States (pictured left) averaged 240 in the Round of 24 Monday morning at Blu-O Paragon Bowling Center in Bangkok to overtake the lead in the Boys Masters competition at the 12th World Youth Championships in Thailand.

    Two-time gold medalist Kent, who has medaled in every discipline at this year's World Youth Championships (gold in Singles and Team, silver in Doubles and All Events) fired games of 202, 246, 221, 279, 257 and 235 for 1440 series to lead the top 8 in round robin match play with 5391 total or an average of 224.63 for 24 games.

    Trailing Kent by 51 pins was All Events champion Sam Cooley (above right) of Australia, who slipped one spot to second place with 5340 (222.50). despite averaging 230 for the day. Cooley toppled 1380 in the six-game round including a high game of 287.

Christian Birlinger of Germany leaped two spots to fourth place with 5183 (215.96) behind a 1348 series.

    Jord Van Weeren of the Netherlands jumped from 13th to fifth place with 5173 (215.54) thanks to the second-highest 1393 series including a 289 game. Kim Bolleby (right) of Sweden fell from fifth to sixth place with 1322 and 5157 (214.88).

    Making the biggest jump of the day from 16th to seventh place was Chris Via (below left), United States. Via rolled the fourth-highest block of the day (1356) for 5124 total (213.50). Rounding out the top 8 was Singapore's Basil Low (below right), who slipped fourth spots from fourth to eighth place with 5113 (213.04) due to a sub-par 1192 series (198.67).

    2012WYCChrisVia.jpg2012WYCBasilLow.jpgKorea's Ryu Ji-Hoon and Hwang Dong-Jun missed the cut by 47 and 49 pins in ninth and tenth place with 5066 and 5050, respectively. Falling out of the top eight were Magnus Johnson Jr. of Sweden (from 8th to 11th) and Shusaku Asato of Japan (from 7th to 18th).

    The top 8 boys will carry their pinfall total forward into Tuesday's seven-game match play round starting at 9 a.m. local time. The top 4 advance to the semifinals (No. 1 vs. No. 4 and No. 2 vs. No. 3) starting at 1 p.m.. The winners will bowl for the last gold medal of the Championships in the title match starting at 3 p.m., while the losers share bronze.

    2012WYCLogo.jpg 12th World Youth Championships takes place at Blu-O Paragon Bowling Center in Bangkok, Thailand, from June 22 - July 3, 2012.

    274 girls and boys from record 48 countries, who must not have reached their 21st birthday on January 1, 2012, compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, four-player Team event, All Events and Masters in the ten-day event.

    The WTBA patterns "Mexico City" and "Atlanta" will be used in Bangkok. The 45-foot Mexico City pattern is the second-longest of the twelve WTBA certified lane pattern (four short, four medium and four long). With a length of 38 feet, the Atlanta pattern is the shortest of the four medium pattern.

    Singles was played on "Mexico City" and Doubles was contested on "Atlanta", while the Team event featured both oil patterns (3 games on each pattern).

    The Masters will be staged on dual lane condition (one lane dressed with the medium pattern and the other lane dressed with the long pattern).
