Freeway Lanes hosts qualifying, match play rounds in High School Boys and Girls, Under-14 Divisions

TeenMastersLogo118q.jpgThe road to New York City's Grand Central Terminal and the Grand Championships in the 15th annual Teen Masters gets underway today at Freeway Lanes in suburban Cleveland.

After qualifying and match play rounds that continue through Thursday, the top four boys and top four girls in the High School Boys and Girls divisions will advance to the unique championship rounds on a specially-installed lane in Vanderbilt Hall inside New York's busy transit hub Aug. 5-8.

Boys and girls in Under-14 divisions also will compete at Freeway Lanes. The Professional Bowlers Association will provide live scoring on pba.com for the Teen Masters qualifying rounds in all four divisions through Wednesday.

The Teen Masters, originated by Killer "B" Promotions founder Gary Beck, is a unique youth tournament, testing player skills on a combination of long- and short-oiled lane conditions as well as bowling equipment limitations which require players to make adjustments in their techniques rather than relying on ball technology.

Each competitor will be allowed to use two bowling balls – an Ebonite Pursuit (or Pursuit S) and an Ebonite Cyclone. More than 170 youth bowlers will compete for more than $100,000 in scholarship money.

Qualifying begins with six games on a 42-foot oiling pattern for all players. High school boys will bowl at 9 a.m. with high school girls and both under-14 groups bowling at 2 p.m. (all times are Eastern).

All groups return at the same times Tuesday for another six games on a shorter 35-foot pattern. All qualifying scores will be posted as they happen on pba.com under its Live Scoring tab. After 12 games, the top one-third of the high school boys' field, top 16 high school girls, top five U14 boys and top four U14 girls will move on.

Wednesday's challenge for the survivors will be a final six-game "mixed pattern" round at 9 a.m., where one lane will use the long-oil pattern and the other lane will use the short-oil pattern. Eight-game round-robin match play rounds in both high school divisions will follow at 7 p.m. Wednesday and 2 p.m. Thursday. Total pinfall after 34 games will determine the four high school boys and four girls who will bowl in New York City.

The U14 Boys and Girls Championships will be held Thursday at 1 p.m.

PBA.com's Xtra Frame, a subscription-based on-line video streaming service, is providing live coverage of the final three days of match play eliminations from Grand Central Terminal Aug. 6-8.
