Germany's Birgit Pöppler widens lead in women's division at European Champions Cup

Overnight leader Birgit Pöppler (pictured left) of Germany, who led the field of 36 women at the European Champions Cup in Holland after the first block on short oil with 1761 eight-game total, also fired the highest series on the long pattern Thursday at bowling center Dekker in Zoetermeer, Netherlands, to widen her lead after 16 of 24 games of qualifying.
Pöppler had games of 203, 250, 269, 228, 186, 189, 211 and a high game of 278 for 1814 total and an average of 226.75, more than 13 pins higher than her nearest competitor. The German, who has won three silver medals at the 2012 Women's European Championships in Holland, totaled 3575 pins and averaged 223.44 for 16 games.

Trailing Pöppler by 230 pins was Daria Kovalova (above right) of Ukraine, who finished her second block with 250 and 237 to add the fourth-best 1682 series to her 1663 first-block pinfall en route to leap from fifth to second place with 3345 (209.06 average).
Defending champion Krista Pöllänen (left), Finland, rolled the third-highest 1691 series today to move from sixth to third place with 3310 total. Alena Korobkova (right) of Russia managed 1611 on long oil to slip from second to fourth place with 3301.

Korobkova was still the best bowler of Squad B followed by Carmen Haandrikman (left) from the host country Netherlands with 3211. Haandrikman used the second-highest series of Squad B and the sixth-highest overall (1650) to leap sixth spots to fifth place.
Rounding out the top 8 were another three bowlers of Squad A. Helga Di Benedetto fell from second to sixth place with 3201. Bigi Manico (right) of Switzerland slipped three spots to seventh place with 3200 and Sandra Andersson slipped from seventh to eighth place with 3161.
Just outside the top 8 looking in was Marjo Pöntinen (right) of Finland, who posted the highest series in Squad B (1708; 213.50) to jump from 25th to ninth place with 3093 total.
Players ranked 19 to 36 will bowl the third and last block on combined oil Friday evening starting at 6 p.m. CEST, while to top 18 will conclude qualifying on Saturday morning starting at 9 a.m.

The top eight men and the top eight women after 24 games advance to the single-elimination finals in best-of-three games format. The player, who wins all three matches, will be declared the champion.
