Qualifying complete for 2007 USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships

Fresno State's P.J. Haggerty, the two-time reigning collegiate player of the year, will have the opportunity to add a second national collegiate singles title to his resume as he qualified late Friday for the 2007 United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Singles Championships, which will be held May 21-22 at AMF Pin Palace Lanes in Huntsville, Ala.
The USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships, which debuted in May 2004, features the top 16 male and top 16 female collegiate bowlers in the country competing for national titles.
Qualifying for the national finals was held Friday at four Sectional Qualifier sites: Allentown, Pa.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Fairview Heights, Ill., and Las Vegas. All participants bowled six games with total pinfall determining final standings. The top four finishers in each division (male and female) at each Sectional Qualifier site advance to the 2007 USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships.
Haggerty, a current Team USA member who won the 2005 men's national collegiate single title, won the Las Vegas Sectional with 1,312. Other notables advancing from Las Vegas were Lindenwood's Daniel Farish, a Junior Team USA member in 2006, and West Texas A&M's William Haverland, who is currently on Junior Team USA.
Another current Junior Team USA member moving on to Huntsville is Robert Morris' Tim Pfeifer, who won the Allentown Sectional with 1,319 and advanced for the second consecutive year. Other sectional champions were Saginaw Valley State's George Juszczyk and Wichita State's Michael Romano.
Rounding out the men's field is Penn State's Jason Weaver, Ferris State's Dan Jernagan, South Florida's Stephen Alessi, Western Illinois' Nick Thomas, Lindenwood's E.J. Parks, Wichita State's Will Barnes, UNLV's Cayson Coyle, Vincennes' Kevin Andes, Vincennes' Michael McGreevy II and Chattanooga's Daniel Hannagan, who also advanced for the second consecutive year.
In the women's division, Wichita State's Elysia Current, a two-time Junior Team USA member and 2003-04 Collegiate Player and Rookie of the Year while at Fairleigh Dickinson University, will look to build on her runner-up finish last year as she qualified by finishing third in the Fairview Heights sectional.
Current will be joined in Huntsville by her Shockers teammate Emily Maier, who won the Fairview Heights Sectional with 1,241. Maier won two medals at the 2006 American Zone Youth Championships with Junior Team USA.
Pikeville's Jamie Foster won the Chattanooga Sectional with 1,354 and will be joined at the national finals by two of her Bears teammates -- Kayla Bandy, who also advanced to nationals in 2005, and Ashley Stahurski. Other sectional winners were Western New England's Leigh Pratt and West Texas A&M's Brandy Silva, who advanced for the second consecutive year.
Virginia Tech's Mindy Pancoast also will be making a repeat trip to the national finals, while Lindenwood's Jennifer Ridilla will be making her first appearance at nationals since 2004. Also qualifying were Fresno State's Karen Rosprim, Newman's Amanda Sharshel, Morehead State's Marissa Martinek, McKendree's Rebekah Diers, Grand Valley State's Valerie Klaas, Erie Community College's Desiree Lee and Mohawk Valley Community College's Marissa Martinek.
At the national finals, all 16 participants in each division bowl eight games to determine seeding for the match play competition. In match play, participants compete in a best-of-five, single-elimination bracket, with winners in each division being crowned national champions of the 2007 USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships.
