All Championship record broken and re-broken on Day 1

The Korean team of Choi Jin-A and Nam Bo-Ra (l-r) shot the highest doubles total in Women's World Championships history Saturday and sit in position to win a gold medal with three of four doubles squads completed.

The Koreans totaled 2,804 on the opening day of the 2007 World Tenpin Bowling Association Women's World Championships at AMF Bol Obispado in Monterrey, Mexico. They beat the previous record of 2,787, which was set earlier in the day by fellow Korean teammates Gye Min-Young and Kim Yeau-Jin.

Both of their totals beat the previous six-game doubles record of 2,737, set in 2003 by England's Kirsten Penny and Zara Glover.

Choi/Nam started with games of 456, 482 and 495 to become the first female duo to crack the 1400-bar over three games with 1,433. The previous record of 1,391 set by Kamilla Kjeldsen and Britt Brøndsted in 2005 was beaten by Gye/Kim, who had 3-game series of 1,395 and 1,392 in the opening squad.

Choi, a left-hander, fired the second highest six-game block in tournament history with 1,437, an average of 239.5 per game, while Nam contributed 1,367. Team USA's Diandra Asbaty holds the individual six-game block record with 1,496, a record she set in 2003.

The Team USA pairing of Tennelle Milligan and Lynda Barnes finished the day in third place overall with 2,729. Milligan shot 1,371 while Barnes totaled 1,358. The Americans had 1,326 in the first block and added 1,403 in the second.

Mexicans Adriana Perez and Sandra Gongora re-broke the record for one-game also set by Gye/Kim in the sixth game. Perez rolled 279 and Gongora added 268 for a 547 one-game total. The Koreans had 526 in their third game to beat the 513 score also set by Glover/Penny in 2003 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Shalin Zulkifli from Malaysia, currently in fourth place with Sharon Koh at 2,653, rolled the highest 3-game series of the tournament thus far with 752 (248, 257, 247). Aumi Guerra, Dominican Republic, shot a 290-game, the second-highest game of the day, to help grab the sixth place together with Annie Henriquez, 2,637.

The top 3 must wait until the final squad of doubles competes at 8 a.m. Central on Sunday to see if their scores will hold up to win the gold, silver and bronze medals.

The Women's World Championships features 227 athletes from 43 countries competing in six events - doubles, trios, team, singles, all-events and Masters.
