Eden SuperBowl in St. Julian's, Malta

The 8th Mediterranean Challenge Cup was held at Eden SuperBowl in St. Julian's, Malta. Two men and two women from eight Mediterranean countries, namely Cyprus, Gibraltar, Greece, Israel, Italy, San Marino, Spain and Malta competed for gold, silver and bronze medals in men's and women's Singles, Doubles, All Events and 4-Player Mixed Teams.

Spain (2), Greece (2), Israel (1) and host country Malta (2) shared the gold medals. Three players - Sue Abela, Malta; Anastasia Rovithaki, Greece; Marcial Ovide, Spain - took home two gold medals each. Two more countries - Italy and Cyprus - won medals while Gibraltar and San Marino left the Maltese Islands at the center of the Mediterranean with empty hands.

Ovide got off to a blistering start as he tallied a 1400-series (233, 184, 277, 236, 202, 268) - the highest six-game series of the entire tournament - en route to win the Men's Singles title. Trailing Ovide by 157 pins to earn the silver medal was Yaniv Gresario, Israel, with 1243. Bronze went to Massimo Pirozzi, Italy, with 1234.

Rovithaki won her first gold medal in the women's Singles event with 1273. Abela, who won the title in 2004 (Rome, Italy) finished second with 1181, while bronze went to youth bowler Niki Schiza from Cyprus with 1171.

Rovithaki then teamed with Despina Chrisanthi to win the women's Doubles with 2310, 6-game total or an average of 192,5. Italy's Iolanda Carfora and Chiara Roiati were second with 2258, while Abela and teammate Lorraine Casha settled for bronze with 2229.

Gresario improved one spot in the men's doubles as he and Israel's international Yahav Rabin combined for 2500 pinfall total en route to win the gold medal. Spain with Ovide and Juan Ramonde finished second with 2468, with Malta's Kenneth Arpa and Mark Spiteri in third place, 2320.

Abela saved her best for the last event, the 4-Player Mixed Team event. She shot a 1374-series (229 average) to lead Malta to the gold medal and successfully defend her All Events title. The Spanish and the Greek teams took silver and bronze.

Abela's finished the tournament with 3730, 18-game total and an average of 207,22. Rovithaki (3656) and Israel's Sara Aviram (3425) captured silver and bronze. In the men's division, 2004 MCC All Events champion Marcial Ovide also defended his title with 3919 pinfall total and an average of 217,72.
