Williams shoots another 300 game and takes the lead in Vienna Open qualifying

    2007EBT18StuartWilliams2.jpg World Ranking Masters champion Stuart Williams from England rolled his second 300 game in the 5th Columbia 300 Vienna Open and the 35th of his career en route to overtake the lead in the qualifying Saturday afternoon at Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria.

    2007EBT18PetteriSalonenSamiKonsteri.jpg Williams, who shot a 1507 six-game series including a 300 game in squad 12, fired games of 259, 225, 300, 224, 280 and 259 to tie previous leader Petteri Salonen (right), Finland, with 1547, a 257.83 average.

    Williams dethroned Salonen due the higher last game, 259-236. His last twelve games were 3054, an average of 254,50.

    2007EBT18AchimGrabowski2.jpg Achim Grabowski (left) had a 299 in game 3 and finished with 1509 to move into third place. Oliver Morig, both of Germany, rolled a 258-triplicate in games 3-5 for 1455, good for fourth place overall.

    Dennis Eklund, Sweden, fell from third to fifth place with 1448. Jimmy Mortensen, Denmark, slipped two spots to sixth with 1445. Peter Ljung, Sweden, had high games of 263 and 257 and a low game of 225 en route to overtake the seventh place with 1444. Juha Immonen, Finland, slipped from 5th to 8th with 1431.

    2007EBT18MaiGingeJensen.jpg With the final qualifying squad to go, the cutoff number for 56th place went up from 1342 to 1357. Four more players, Mai Ginge-Jensen (right), Denmark (1384), Marco Parapini, Italy (1364), Tomek Janicki, Poland 1360) and Joanne Allsebrook, England (1354) topped that number.

    Williams continued to lead the doubles competition with Tina Hulsch, Germany, with 2904 six-game total and an average of 238.00. Salonen and Sami Konsteri, Finland, remained in second place with 2886, with Dennis Eklund, Sweden and Thomas Gross, Austria, in third with 2820.

    2007EBT18StuartWilliamsNickFroggatt.jpg L-R Williams and his compatriot Nick Froggatt, who won the Ankara Open and the Maribor Open this year, moved into fourth place with 2816. Froggatt, who was the "man on the bubble" after 12 squads could not improve his score with 1269 and slipped out of the top 56.

    Grabowski and Gross, the Austrian champion and hometown favorite, totaled 2783 to overtake the 7th place. Gross is now third, fifth (with Dominic Barrett, England) and seventh. Morig and Thorsten Filor, both Germany, joined forces for a 2756 effort, good enough for 10th place.

    The qualifying for the Vienna Open finals is contested as a unique doubles tournament. 10.230 Euro or approx. US$ 14,510 from the overall prize fund of 60.530 Euro ($85,850) will be given to the top 20 teams.

    Each team rolls one six-game block. Unlimited re-entries with different partners are possible but each player can only cash once with the same partner. The team with the highest total pinfall including handicap will be declared the winner (no finals will be played).

    The winners of the Doubles event will split 1.600 Euro or approx. US$2,270. World champions Martin Larsen and Robert Andersson, Sweden, are the defending champions.

    Qualifying runs from Wednesday through Saturday and ends with the ultimate Desperado Squad on Saturday evening, Oct. 20.

    A total of 68 players from the qualifying will advance to the finals starting on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 8am:

    • The eight players with the highest six-game blocks will earn one bye and will be seeded 1-8 in the match play round of 32
    • players positioned 9th to 56th after qualifying
    • the six leaders of Squad 1 through 6 not among the top 56 and
    • the top 6 from the Desperado Squad.


    Advancing as "lucky loser" are currently (cutoff number 1357):
    • Squad 1: Pavla Novakova, Czech Republic, 1246
    • Squad 2: Thomas Tybl, Austria, 1281
    • Squad 3: Karel Kutina, Czech Republic, 1336
    • Squad 4: Christian Provaznik, Austria, 1356
    • Squad 5: Anton Stiel, Austria, 1334
    • Squad 6: Diandra Asbaty, United States, 1333.

    All but the top 8 qualifiers will bowl 6 games starting from scratch to cut to the top 24. Those 24 will be seeded 9-32 in the match play round of 32.

    Match play rounds of 32, 16 and 8 are single-elimination, best-of-three games. The highest seeded player bowls the lowest seeded player, the second-highest seeded player vs. the second-lowest seeded player, etc.

    The semi-finals and the championship match will be decided in one game. A major on the European Bowling Tour, bowlers will be competing for a top prize of 7.000 Euro ($9,930) and an overall prize fund of 60.530 Euro ($85,850).
