Henry_Gonzalez_5170.jpg Henry Gonzalez won his first career PBA Senior Tour title in style, striking nine times in a row in the deciding game to defeat Vince Mazzanti Jr., 2-1, in the title match of the 2005 PBA Senior Empire State Open at Bowlers Club.

Gonzalez won the first game in the best-of-three match play championship, 237-227. Mazzanti had a chance to strike out in the 10th and send the game to a roll-off, but he left a 7-pin with his second shot in the 10th.

Mazzanti came back to win game two, 258-198, but a determined Gonzalez came out on fire in the deciding game. After a spare in the first frame, the two-time PBA Tour titlist struck in the next nine frames on his way to the 279-246 win and his first title in four seasons on the Senior Tour.

"This was a tough one. This format is really tough and you just have to mow people down," said Gonzalez, whose previous highest finish was 2nd in the 2003 PBA Senior Epicenter Classic. "You don't get too many chances to bowl for a title so when you do you have to go for it."

Gonzalez advanced to the title match by defeating Don Sylvia, 2-0, in the semifinals, winning the two games by a total of three pins. He had a tough road to the semifinals, defeating PBA Hall of Famers George Pappas and Teata Semiz, as well as two-time PBA Senior Tour Player of the Year Robert Glass in match play.

Mazzanti defeated Hugo McGroty, in the other semifinal, 2-1. McGroty came back from a 2-1 deficit to sideline No. 1 seed and red hot favorite Tom Baker in the Round of 16, 3-2.

Gonzalez earns $8,000 for his title, while Mazzanti takes home $4,500. McGroty, who finished 3rd, and Sylvia, who finished 4th, each take home $3,000.

The PBA Senior Tour returns next week with the 2005 PBA Clarksville Open in Clarksville, Tenn. The final four will bowl for the $8,000 top prize Wednesday, April 27 at 7 p.m. ET.

"The right lane got tighter and tighter and the left lane never changed the whole match," said Petraglia, who needed his clutch shot in the 10th on the right lane. "I kept moving on the right lane in the 10th and thought I had moved enough. I thought it would make it to the pocket and I was very surprised it didn't. It was a big relief when I struck."

Tom Baker earns top seed for match play

Tom Baker averaged 240 in his eight game set Tuesday to lead qualifying and earn a bye into the round of 16 in the 2005 PBA Senior Empire State Open at Bowlers Club. Baker led the field by 149 pins, finishing with a 5,783 24-game pinfall over three days of qualifying. The top eight earn a bye into Wednesday's Round of 16.

"My goal all along was to get in the top eight and I accomplished that. But if I don't win in match play it doesn't mean anything," said Baker, who is the only bowler on the Senior Tour with an exemption on the PBA Tour. "I felt like Walter Ray (Williams Jr.) out there. Now I know what it feels to run away with it. I'm kind of leery about match play though. Here I am leading and if I go out and lose it was all for nothing. It puts a lot of pressure on you."

Baker, who is bowling in his first career PBA Senior Tour event, shot 270 in two of his first three games and averaged 251 over his first five to build an insurmountable lead. Both of Baker's 270 games were identical, but by any means normal. He had the front three in each game, then threw his next shot in the gutter. After picking up the spare, he struck out for 270.

Norb Wetzel sits in seconnd for the second consecutive day, finishing with 5,634. David Kneas averaged 241.25 in his eight-game set to move up from 12th to third with 5,523. Vince Mazzanti Jr. is fourth with 5,452 while Roger Bowker is fifth with 5,451.

Hugo McGroty earned the eighth and final bye, finishing 11 pins ahead of John Petraglia. Petraglia and Teata Semiz were tied for the final spot heading into game eight, but Semiz shot 248 to move into 7th and finish with 5,447. Petraglia shot 235 to finish 9th with 5,434.

The top 32 advance to match play which begins tonight night at 5 p.m. ET. Qualifiers 17-32 will bowl each other in best-of-five match play with the winners advancing to face qualifiers 9-16 tonight at 7 p.m. The winners of those matches will play qualifiers 1-8 on Wednesday at 8 a.m.

The top four will bowl best-of-three match play at 4 p.m. Wednesday. The winners advance to the best-of-three championship match immediately following, with the winner taking home the $8,000 top prize.

There were 10 Senior Tour players who picked up "Super Senior" checks. Super Seniors are the top 10 bowlers 60 and over who finished outside of the top 48. Nice start for the PBA Senior Rookie Tom Baker

If his first day is any indication, Tom Baker is going to be a huge success on the PBA Senior Tour. Baker, the only Senior Tour bowler who is also exempt on the PBA Tour shot a 1957 eight-game pinfall to lead the first day of qualifying Sunday in the PBA Senior Empire State Open at Bowlers Club.

Baker started out hot, averaging 253.60 in his first five games, including 258-279-256 in games 3-5. He struck in at least the first five frames in each of the first five games, including eight in a row to start game five.

"It was fun out there but I've got a lot of people telling me I'm going to have a lot of success out here and I'm going to be stealing money. It was a little hard to concentrate with people saying things like that," said Baker, who earned a five-year PBA Tour exemption by winning last season's 2004 PBA World Championship. "I still have to bowl. It's just eight games and it doesn't mean anything. Keeping focused is the hardest part."

Baker, who has won 10 PBA Tour titles, turned 50 last September to qualify for the Senior Tour. He finished 34th in the 2004-05 PBA World Point Rankings. On Sunday, he shot at least 236 in seven of eight games, dropping only as low as 216. Baker finished the day with a 237 to hold off five-time Senior Tour titlist Johnny Petraglia, who is second with 1902.

Mel Wolf is third with 1888 while Teata Semiz is fourth with 1886 and Guppy Troup fifth with 1,884. All 145 bowlers will return Monday for an additional eight games of qualifying. The field will then be cut to the top 1/3 who will bowl nine more games of qualifying on Tuesday. The top 32 will then advance to match play, with the top eight receiving a bye into the Round of 8. The top four will bowl best-of-three match play for the $8,000 top prize on Wednesday.
