2008USBCOCAlDuffey.jpg 2008USBCOCFlossieDuffey.jpg In the 71 years they've been married, Flossie and Al Duffey of Osage City, Kan., have shared a lifetime of experiences and memories, and they added one more to the list when the competed at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships on Friday.

The two have been bowling together for 50 years, but because no one from their hometown has ever expressed interest in traveling to the USBC Open Championships, it took until they were both 95 years old to finally decide to make the trip together.

While Al did compete once before when the 1989 event was held in Wichita, Kan., just two hours from their home, the 2008 tournament at the Albuquerque Convention Center marked Flossie's debut.

The Duffeys now are believed to be the oldest couple (190) to bowl doubles at the Open Championships, while the late Art Shaver of Atlanta and the late William Hargrove of Clermont, Ga., hold the distinction of the oldest doubles team, having competed in the 2001 event in Reno, Nev., with a combined age of 203.

"Our kids met us out here, and it was great to see everyone and get together," said Flossie, who proudly wore her first-time participant button and rolled a 384 series in singles and 271 in doubles. "I couldn't believe we were doing this as old as we are, but I had a great time. I loved everything about this. I loved the ride, and I loved the sightseeing, and the stadium is really swell."

The couple made the trip to Albuquerque by car with two of their children and their spouses from Illinois and Nebraska, and they were joined at the tournament by their son and his wife from Arizona as well as a handful of other family members. In all, the Duffey's family includes three children, seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and the entourage in Albuquerque included 11 people.

"It was wonderful watching them bowl six games and still keep up," said the couple's daughter Clara Piper. "When I heard they wanted to do this, I said oh wow, but if they really wanted to go, I'd have no problem bringing them. This was life-long dream for my father, and it was awesome."

Flossie and Al still travel 30 miles once a week to bowl in league, and they have each averaged around 130 for the last few years. Al currently is listed as the oldest male bowler in Kansas.

"We've been told that we're the oldest bowling couple in the world, and we wanted to make history here, but even if it's not true, our main reason for coming was to have fun," said Al, who shot 323 in doubles and 298 in singles Friday.

Flossie enjoyed her time on the lanes so much Friday that she did entertain thoughts about making an encore appearance at the 2009 event in Las Vegas.

"You never know," said Flossie, who along with her husband, turns 96 in September. "But I don't like to plan too far ahead. I know we sure enjoyed this, though, and that's the main thing."
