2008USBCOCPhilippHudak.jpg Many bowlers in pursuit of that elusive perfect game at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships strive year after year to better themselves and build on previous tournament experiences so that maybe one day, they too, can claim the ultimate achievement on the tournament lanes.

On Monday, Philipp Hudak of Columbia S.C., reached the milestone in only his second USBC Open Championships appearance and posted the 27th 300 of this year's tournament at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

His family and friends call him 'the machine' because he is so mechanical in his approach to the lanes, and years of hard work paid off as he rolled games of 202, 300 and 155 for a 657 series and helped Damage 1 of Columbia, S.C., to a 3,001 team total.

"I didn't do this alone," said Hudak, a 23-year-old right-hander and senior at the University of South Carolina. "I owe a lot to many others. My dad, Brian Hudak, got me started in bowling when I was 8 years old, and many others encouraged me and helped me get to where I am right now. Even my younger brother, Paul, pushes me. We all love it, and the whole family, even my grandparents, enjoy the sport and being together. We bowl in league every Tuesday night and just the fun of being together is what it is all about."

Hudak soon will graduate with a degree in civil engineering to go along with his machine-like methods in his approach to bowling, which has helped him to two successful years at the Open Championships. After a 1,913 all-events total in his debut at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., last year, Hudak added 678 in doubles and 569 in singles this year for a 1,904 all-events effort.

"I'm really enjoying the whole tournament here in Albuquerque," Hudak said. "Even though my family could not travel with me for the tournament, I know my brother is watching me on the Internet, and I hope my mom, Kathy Manor, is watching, too. People say I didn't look nervous, but let me tell you, I was. Right now, I am still nervous, I mean look at the game right after the 300. I was still nervous about what just happened. I can hardly wait for next year. This is fun, and I like everything about it, especially the friends you make when you get out here and bowl. Everyone is rooting for you to make it."
