PBA Senior Chillicothe Open

Bob_Glass_1702.jpg Bob Glass is big fan of Shawnee Lanes. Glass, who won his last PBA Senior Tour title in the same bowling center exactly a year ago, captured the 2005 PBA Senior Chillicothe Open when he defeated Gene Stus in the title match two-games-to-one Wednesday.

The 2004 PBA Senior Player of the Year dropped the opening game, 255-179, before switching his game plan. "I started out playing outside and I looked like a clown. Stus was whacking them inside," said Glass, who won the $8,000 top prize. "So, I moved deep inside and I started to play a lot better."

Glass, who captured his 9th career PBA Senior Tour title, won game two, 280-194. In game three, he struck once in the first three frames before firing four straight strikes. After Stus left a 4-pin in the 9th frame, Glass struck twice to seal the victory with a 236-196 game three win.

"There are certainly places I feel very comfortable bowling, and Shawnee Lanes is one of those places," Glass said of his success there. "No matter what they do here or what oil [pattern] they put out…this lane surface seems to play well with my roll. Plus, I like the area. I'm more comfortable in a smaller town."

Glass defeated Don Sylvia, 2-1, in the semifinals after falling behind 1-0. Glass began the match playing inside, but soon moved outside towards the gutter to match Sylvia's shot. Stus advanced to the title match by defeating Roger LeClair, 2-0, in the semifinals.

The PBA Senior Tour will head to Sterling Heights, Mich. for the 2005 PBA Senior U.S. Open, May 14-20, at Sunnybrook Lanes.

Bob Glass targets 9th career PBA Senior title

Three-time PBA Senior Player of the Year Bob Glass took another step toward defending his title as he defeated Don Patterson, 3-1, to advance to the semifinals in the 2005 PBA Senior Chillicothe Open at Shawnee Lanes Wednesday afternoon.

Glass, who won the 2004 PBA Senior Chillicothe Open en route to his third Senior Player of the Year award, nearly withdrew from the event due to an illness. The eight-time PBA Senior Tour champion has battled through it, defeating Patterson in the Round of 8 and last week's champion, Dale Eagle in the Round of 16.

"Saturday I just stayed in bed all day, and Sunday the ball felt like it weighed 20-25 pounds," said Glass, who will face Don Sylvia in the semifinals. "I felt like I got better as the days went on but bowled worse. Last night Mickey (Higham) showed me how to play the lanes, and it made a big difference. I just started playing a big sweeping hook."

Against Patterson, Glass dropped the first game of their best-of-five match, 222-196, but evened the match by striking out in the 10th for a 279-274 win in game two. Glass struck in his last six frames to win game three, 257-245, and moved on with a 216-155 win in game four.

Sylvia advanced to the semifinals by defeating Higham, 3-0. The other semifinal features Gene Stus against Roger LeClair. Stus came back from an 0-2 deficit to defeat Tom Baker, Buffalo, 3-2.

The final four will bowl the best-of-three semifinals at 7 p.m. ET. Those winners advance to the championship match, also best-of-three, with the champion taking home the $8,000 top prize.

It's down to 16 in PBA Senior Chillicothe Open

Looking for his second PBA Senior Tour title and his first in the last 15 events, Don Sylvia defeated Roger Bowker, 3-2 in the 2005 PBA Senior Chillicothe Open Round of 24 Tuesday evening at Shawnee Lanes.

Sylvia, who won the 2003 PBA Senior Manassas Open, took an early 2-0 lead by defeating Bowker by a combined six pins. He opened the match with a 202-201 win in game one and a 238-233 win in game two. Bowker fought back with a 215-193 win in game three and tied the match with a 223-203 victory in game four. Sylvia then made his third ball change of the match and sealed the win with a 267-224 win in the fifth and final game.

"I knew I was in trouble when I gave game three away," Sylvia, who has finished seventh or higher in the first two PBA Senior Tour events of the season, said. "I knew he was going to come back. I lost the look I had in the first two games. The lanes changed quickly. I switched to my third ball in game five and got a better reaction and started to hook it. If you don't make a quick change then you'll be done."

Sylvia will face Chuck Haus, who was seeded 8th after 24 games of qualifying. Defending champion Bob Glass will face last week's winner Dale Eagle in the Round of 16. Glass advanced by defeating Roy Buckley, 3-2.

Dale Eagle looking for back-to-back titles

Dale Eagle continues hot hand and leads in the 2005 PBA Senior Chillicothe Open with a 3,650 16-game pinfall after averaging 224.88 in his eight-game set Monday at Shawnee Lanes.

Eagle won last week's 2005 PBA Senior Clarksville Open his 9th career PBA Senior Tour victory. Another win would make him just the fourth bowler to reach the 10-title plateau, and the first to win back-to-back Senior Tour events since Bob Glass accomplished the feat in 2001.

"I don't think about [repeating]. I just get up there and try to bowl," said Eagle. "If I did, that would be nice. It's probably in the back of my mind, but I haven't really thought about it. I'm just trying to go up there and make a good shot."

Monday, Eagle rebounded from a 168 in his first game to shoot 222, 256 and 258 in his next three games. After a 193 in game five, the 1999 PBA Senior Player of the Year closed out his day with scores of 261, 235 and 206.

Gene Stus, the 1992 PBA Senior Player of the Year and 11-time title winner is second with 3,646 after shooting a 205 in his final game on Monday.

First round leader Mickey Higham slipped to third with 3,626 while George Miller III sits in fourth with 3,582. PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker is fifth with 3,572. Timothy Kauble hit the cutoff number with 3314 and an average of 207,13.

The top 50 bowlers return Tuesday to bowl eight more games of qualifying. The top 32 will then advance to match play, with the top eight receiving a bye into the round of 16. The semifinals and finals on Wednesday will feature best-of-three match play, with the winner taking home the $8,000 top prize.

Mickey Higham out of the gates quickly in Chillicothe

Mickey Higham used a fast start to take the lead in the 2005 PBA Senior Chillicothe Open with a 1,876 eight-game qualifying session Sunday at Shawnee Lanes. Higham got out of the gates quickly, using 10 strikes to shoot 258 in game one. He followed that with back-to-back scores of 234.

"You're always more comfortable if things start out right," said Higham, who went on to average 234.50 for his set. "That makes it easier to weather the changes … I bowled consistently and had an even shot across the house today."

Higham, 58, has cashed in 20 of 28 PBA Senior Tour events, but is still looking for his first career victory. He owns nine PBA Wild Turkey Bourbon Senior Regional Tour titles.

Two veterans are just behind Higham. Last week's champion Dale Eagle is second with 1,851 and Gene Stus is third with 1,832. With a win, Eagle can become the fourth bowler to reach 10 career PBA Senior Tour titles.

For Stus, a victory this week would be his 12th on the PBA Senior Tour, putting him two titles behind all-time leader, John Handegard (14). Allie Clarke is currently fourth with 1,806 while George Pappas, is fifth with 1,804.

The 151-bowler field will return Monday for an additional eight games of qualifying. The field will then be cut to the top 1/3 who will bowl eight more games of qualifying on Tuesday. The top 32 will advance to match play, with the top eight receiving a bye into the round of 16.

The semifinals and finals on Wednesday will feature best-of-three match play, with the winner taking home the $8,000 top prize.
