Glover leads top 8 women into the finals at 31st European Champions Cup

    2008ECCZaraGlover2.jpg Overnight leader Zara Glover (left) posted the second-highest 8-game block on the mixed lane condition (left lane with short oil, right lane with long oil) on the third and final day of the preliminaries en route to lead the top 8 women into the finals of the 31st European Champions Cup at Treff Bowling in Duisburg, Germany.

    2008ECCMariekeDeJong2_small.jpg Glover averaged 217.38 on Friday and felled 1739 pins to win the qualifying with 5334 and an overall average of 222.25.

    (right), Netherlands, who led the field of 39 players from 39 ETBF member federations after the first block on short oil, moved up one spot behind a 1734 series to land in second place with 5239 total (218.29).

    Krista Pöllänen (right), Finland, who moved to second place on the long pattern on Thursday, fell to fourth with 5181 (215.83) after a 1610 series on the dual condition.

The young Belgian rolled the third-highest block today with 1737 to leap two spots to fifth place with 5041 (210.04).

    Austrian Ivonne Gross (right) slipped one spot to sixth place (5001; 208.38) behind a 1668 series. Gross will meet Sacco in the quarterfinals.

    2008ECCPatriciaLuoto_small.jpg 2008ECCOlgaTarasova_small.jpg Starting the day in 13th place, Patricia Luoto (left) from Germany fired the highest block of the day with 1842, an average of 230.25, en route to jump into 7th place with 4955 (206.46). Luoto, who won the Vienna Open and made the finals of the Lahti Open earlier this month, will take on No. 2 seed Marieke de Jong.

    Olga Tarasova (right) of the Ukraine rolled the sixth highest block on the mixed condition (1683) and finisher her third block with back-to-back 213 games and 228 to move up two spots and to grab the 8th and final qualifying post with 4889 (203.71). Tarasova will face tournament leader Glover in the first match play round.

    2008ECCBrittBrondsted_small.jpg 2008ECCSueAbela_small.jpg Luoto's and Tarasova's feat came at the expense of Sue Abela (left), Malta (10th, 4879) and Diana Zavjalova, Latvia (12th, 4749), who fell out of the top 8 during the third qualifying block.

    World Ranking Masters champion and 3-time European ranking leader Britt Brøndsted (right), Denmark, missed the cut in 9th place by 27 pins (4889; 203.71).

    All players bowled three 8-game blocks (a total of 24 games) preliminaries over three days: Block 1 on short oil, Block 2 on long oil and Block 3 on short/long oil (left lane short, right lane long).
