Singapore saves best for last to win Women's Team gold in 22nd Asian Intercity Championship

    2008AIBCTeamSingapore.jpg The women's four-player Team event in the 22nd Asian Intercity Tenpin Bowling Championship was decided in the sixth and final game Wednesday afternoon at Macau Bowling Center in Macau, China.

    Entering the final game the teams from Pasay City (3789), Paranaque City (3773), both Philippines, Singapore (3769) and Daegu, Korea (3751) were within 38 pins.

    Singapore's Denise Chan Jie Lin, Darshini Krishna, Genevieve Gan Hui Ying and New Hui Fen (pictured) rolled a 777 game to wrap up the victory with 4546 pinfall total and an average of 189.42.

    New Hui Fen led the team with 1277 (212.83), the second-highest effort of all 46 players.

    Paranaque City with Yap Seok Kim, Lucy Cheng, Liza Clutario and Cecilia Yap, who were fifth after the first block of three games, maintained the second place with a 745 game to secure the silver medal with 4518 (188.25). It was the third medal for Paranaque in as many events after gold in Singles (Clutario) and Doubles (Yap/Clutario).

    Block One leader Angeli Lao, Sheena Go, Kathlynn Ann Lopez and Ditas Red from Pasay City slipped from first to third place behind a 715 final game and had to settle for the bronze medal with 4504 (187.67).

    Daegu with Choi Da Som, Sin Hae Young, Lee Ji Un and Kim Han Soi landed in fourth place with 4436 (184.83). Happy Valley, Hong Kong, with Lai Kin Ngoh, Maria Lau, Carol Choi and Carmen Tam slipped from third to fifth place in the second block with 4296 (179.00).

    2008AIBCCeciliaYap.jpg Cecilia Yap (pictured right) cruised to victory in All Events (combined results of Singles, Doubles and Team events) and earned the third gold medal for Paranaque City, Philippines. The 2003 World Champion in Trios posted the field-best 1290 series in the team event to lead the field by at least 245 pins after 18 games with 3841 total and an average of 213.39

    Singapore's New Hui Fen secured the silver medal with 3596 (199.78), while Paranaque's Liza Clutario took the bronze with 3591 (199.50), her fourth medal in as many events.

    The top 16 players from All Events advanced to the Masters competition. Filomena Choi, Macau City, grabbed the 16th and final spot with 3317 and an average of 184.28 for 18 games.

    However, as the bowlers from Uiwang, Korea, cannot stay for the Masters event due to other commitments, 12th place Ko Young Sun and 15th place Kim Kum Soon will be replaced by 17th Patrica Hui Tong, Taipa, Macau and 20th Lee Ji Un, Daegu, Korea, respectively.

    13th place Choi Da Som from Daegu, Korea had to withdraw due to injury. Choi will be replaced by 19th Denise Chan Jie Lin, Singapore.

    The 22nd Asian Intercity Tenpin Bowling Championships will run until Friday, Dec. 5, at Macau Bowling Center, a 24-laner located in the Cotai International Sports Complex in Macau, China.

    46 women and 80 men representing 21 cities will compete in Singles, Doubles, Team, All-Events and Masters.

    Cities that have registered with four men and four women will also compete for the City Champion Cup for men and for women and the Satoh Cup, the Overall City Champion Cup, named after the late founding member, Mr. Shinto Satoh.

    The 21 participating cities are Taipei City from Chinese Taipei, Tamuning from Guam, Hong Kong City, Happy Valley, Kowloon and Victoria from Hong Kong, Bangalore, Chennai and Delhi from India, Daegu, Pohang and Uiwang from Korea, Kuantan and Shah Alam from Malaysia, Macau City, Coloane and Taipa from Macau, Saipan, Paranaque City and Pasay City from the Philippines and Singapore.

    Women from Pasay City lead as team event has reached halfway point at 22nd Asian Intercity Championship
