Youth bowler Cheryl Cheong has caught the eye of national coach Holloway Cheah and she may be up for a second promotion since the start of the year.

Cheryl, who was roped into the national youth squad on Jan 1, will be recommended for promotion into the back-up squad today.

National Holloway Cheah said Cheryl is a talented bowler and she illustrated it with a fine performance in the recent national championships.

"In my years as a coach, I've never came across a bowler making an immediate impact just a few days after joining the national set-up. Cheryl is a champion in the making," said Holloway yesterday.

Cheryl, who is from Kuala Lumpur, stole the show in the National Interstate Championships by bagging a gold medal in the women's all-events, edging out several leading national bowlers to the title.

On Saturday, the 18-year-old, came close to winning the women's national title but a thumb injury affected her performance in the final. She finished second to national elite bowler Siti Safiyah Abdul Rahman.

"I will make my recommendation to promote Cheryl to Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) selection committee tomorrow (today)," Holloway said.

The national women's back-up squad currently comprise Nur Syakirah Yeoh, Sin Li Jane and just promoted duo Tengku Emanina Laily and Fatin Syazliana, while the men's squad is made up of Zaid Izlan, Kelvin Keong, Mohd Noer Said and recruit Kang Bo Long.

The eight back-up bowlers will officially receive their respective appointment letters today.

Holloway, however, remains on the look out for bowlers to fill up the quota in the men's and women's back-up squads.

"I need to fill two vacant spots in the men's team and one spot in the women's squad. I and other coaches will be monitoring the progress of bowlers under the national youth programme and those who make a mark will be promoted into the back squad," added Holloway.
