2005PBAS08DaleEagle.jpg Dale Eagle won a battle between a pair of nine-time PBA Senior Tour titlists, defeating Bob Glass, 2-0, in the championship match of the 2005 PBA Senior Epicenter Classic Thursday evening at Epicenter Bowling Complex.

Eagle, Tavares, Fla., overcame the three-time PBA Senior Player of the Year in Glass to become just the fourth bowler to win 10 PBA Senior Tour titles. He also put himself in the forefront of the 2005 PBA Senior Player of the Year race, winning his second title of the season. Glass was also looking for his second title of the season.

"You always want to be Player of the Year," said Eagle, who won the 2005 PBA Senior Clarksville Open earlier this season. "There are a lot of great players out there and a lot of guys having great years. It would be a great feeling."

Eagle narrowly won game one of the best-of-three games title match. Glass, Lawrence, Kan., struck out in the 10th frame, forcing Eagle to double and knock down nine pins in the 10th for a 258-256 win. Eagle then left no doubt about it in game two, winning 278-238.

"I made the right decisions all week," said Eagle. "I slowed up my speed a lot … I just used a little flip off my hand and it worked perfectly."

Eagle, who defeated Gary Hiday 2-1 in the semifinals, wins $8,000 for 1st place. Glass, who advanced to the title match with a 2-0 win over Dick Baker, takes home $4,000. Glass has finished in the top 10 in seven of eight Senior Tour events this season.

The 2005 PBA Senior Tour will take a month off before the season wraps up with the final three events. The final stretch of the season begins with the 2005 Senior Manassas Open in Manassas, Va., July 30-Aug. 3.

Dick wins the battle of the Bakers

Dick Baker knocked off Tom Baker, a candidate for both PBA Senior Tour Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year, winning a tight Round of 8 match, 3-2, Thursday in the 2005 PBA Senior Epicenter Classic at Epicenter Bowling Complex.

Baker, Henderson, Nev., won the battle of the Bakers to advance to his first semifinal of the season. The 63-year-old is looking for his first career PBA Senior Tour title in 119 events. After the Bakers traded wins over the first four games of their best-of-five game match, the final game came down to the wire.

Tom Baker, Buffalo, N.Y., who won the 2005 PBA Senior U.S. Open earlier this season, left a solid 10-pin late in the game but struck out in the 10th to finish with 247. Dick Baker, the Senior Tour veteran, needed to double in the 10th to win, which he did, sending the rookie home with a 258-247 loss.

"It's a great honor to beat a guy like Tom Baker," said Dick Baker of his opponent. "It was a really good match. I tip my hat off to him. He is one of the classiest guys in the business. It's not fun bowling matches like that because someone has to lose."

Baker will face three-time PBA Senior Player of the Year Bob Glass, Lawrence, Kan., in one semifinal. Glass, who already owns one Senior Tour title this season, defeated Bill Roeben, Bonney Lake, Wash., 3-1.

The other semifinal features nine-time PBA Senior Tour titlist Dale Eagle, Tavares, Fla., against Gary Hiday, Indianapolis. Eagle also won a title earlier this season and is looking to become just the fourth bowler with at least 10 PBA Senior Tour titles.

The semifinals and finals will feature best-of-three match play, with the winner taking home the $8,000 top prize.

Round of 24 winners to meet top 8 in Epicenter Classic

Norb Wetzel nearly decided against bowling this week, but an inspirational friend changed his mind. Now, Wetzel is in position to win his first PBA Senior Tour title since 1999 as he swept Mel Wolf, 3-0, in the Round of 24 Wednesday in the 2005 PBA Senior Epicenter Classic at Epicenter Bowling Complex.

Wetzel, whose lone Senior Tour title came in the 1999 PBA Villages Senior Open, is dedicating his performance to his friend, Gene Kelly, who is battling cancer. "I have been having trouble with my back and hips and I almost didn't compete this week. Emotionally I get down on myself and I beat myself up with a baseball bat when things don't go well," said Wetzel, Fond du Lac, Wis.

"My friend is so positive that his only concern is me getting out of my slump and trying to bowl well. That overwhelmed me. If he can go through what he goes through every day, the least I can do is come here and bowl. That's what is driving me this week."

The left-hander was steady over his three games against Wolfe, averaging 216.67. He won game one, 211-186, then narrowly won game two, 226-225. Wetzel punched his ticket to the Round of 16, where he will face nine-time Senior Tour titlist Dale Eagle, with a 213-173 win in game three.

Also advancing to the Round of 16 was Rohn Morton, who knocked off 2005 ABC Senior Masters champion Vince Mazzanti Jr., 3-0. The eight winners will advance to face qualifiers 1-8, who received byes into the round of 16, Thursday at 11 a.m. PT. The semifinals and finals on Thursday will feature best-of-three match play, with the winner taking home the $8,000 top prize.

Tom Baker is in some pretty familiar territory

After leading qualifying in the 2005 PBA Senior Epicenter Classic with a 5,432 24-game pinfall, Tom Baker has earned a bye into the Round of 16 for the sixth time in six standard events this season.

Baker averaged 222.88 over his final eight-game set Wednesday afternoon at the Epicenter Bowling Complex to finish in the top spot for the second straight day. The PBA Hall of Famer shot back-to-back 227s in games two and three before finishing with a 247 in game eight, his high score of the day.

Baker is winless in the first five standard events this season, despite receiving an all-important bye during each event thanks to his top-8 qualifying finishes. "Whatever changes have to be made tomorrow, I need to be ready for it," said Baker, who won the 2005 Senior U.S. Open, one of two major events this season. "I can't waste that first game, and I have to be right on top of it from the start."

Bob Handley was second with 5,329 while nine-time PBA Senior Tour titlist Dale Eagle was thirrd with 5,228. The 2004 PBA Senior Player of the Year Robert Glass was fourth with 5,225.

PBA Senior Tour veteran Dick Baker took 8th with 5,184, beating Michael Henry for the final bye into the round of 16 by a single pin. Match play begins tonight at 5 p.m. PT with the best-of-five games Round of 32, with qualifiers 17-32 bowling each other for the right to advance.

The semifinals and finals on Thursday will feature best-of-three match play, with the winner taking home the $8,000 top prize.

Tom Baker overtakes lead in Epicenter Classic

Tom Baker, looking to put a stranglehold on the PBA Senior Rookie of the Year award, leads the 2005 PBA Senior Epicenter Classic with a 3,649 16-game pinfall. The PBA Hall of Famer averaged 231.38 over his eight-game set Tuesday at the Epicenter Bowling Complex.

Baker, Buffalo, N.Y., began his day by striking on his first 10 shots en route to a 289 opening score. "I've been throwing it pretty well lately. I've got a good look on the lanes," said Baker, who also shot 260 in game three. "My scores were pretty good today. I'm just doing my job and staying in my routine. I want to stay in the top 8 again and get the byes [into the round of 16]."

Baker won the 2005 PBA Senior U.S. Open in May, and another PBA Senior Tour title would make him the first multiple title winner this season.

The 2004 PBA Senior Player of the Year Bob Glass, Lawrence, Kan., is second with 3,548 while the 2003 PBA Senior Player of the Year Bob Chamberlain, The Villages, Fla., is third with 3,522. Chamberlain is looking to end a 16-event winless streak.

Jan Kravcheno Sr., Kalida, Ohio, is 32nd with 3,287, just four pins ahead of Tim Bowers, East Wenatchee, Wash., for the final spot into the next round of qualifying. The top 32 bowlers will return Wednesday for eight more games of qualifying to determine seeding for match play.

Match play begins Wednesday evening with the best-of-five games round of 32, with qualifiers 17-32 bowling each other for the right to advance. The semifinals and finals on Thursday will feature best-of-three match play, with the winner taking home the $8,000 top prize.

PBA Senior Players of the Year lead in Epicenter Classic

The last two PBA Senior Players of the Year sit atop the standings after the first day of qualifying in the 2005 PBA Senior Epicenter Classic. Bob Glass, the 2004 PBA Senior Player of the Year, leads the 85-bowler field after posting a 1,828 eight-game pinfall Monday at the Epicenter Bowling Complex.

Glass, Lawrence, Kan., has six top 10 finishes this season, and he's battling a sore left knee this week. "Today was much more luck than anything else," said Glass, who hurt his left knee a few weeks ago in the 2005 American Bowling Congress Senior Masters. "I missed seven single-pin spares, but because there was a lot of oil [on the lanes], I was able to get by and shove the ball out there."

Glass, looking to win his record fourth PBA Senior Player of the Year award, opened his day with scores of 220, 213 and 225. His high score of 258 in game five was followed by a 247 in game six.

Bob Chamberlain, the 2003 PBA Senior Player of the Year, sits one pin behind Glass with 1,827 after shooting 216 in his final game Monday. Chamberlain, The Villages, Fla., is looking to snap a 16-event winless streak.

PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker, Buffalo, N.Y., is third with 1,798. Jerry Walls, Kennewick, Wash., is fourth with 1,755 while Henry Gonzalez, Colorado Springs, Colo., is fifth with 1,748.

After eight additional games of qualifying Tuesday, the top one-third of the field will roll eight more games of qualifying Wednesday. The top 32 qualifiers will advance to best-of-five games match play, with qualifiers 17-32 bowling each other Wednesday evening. The semifinals and finals on Thursday will feature best-of-three match play, with the winner taking home the $8,000 top prize.
