Gene_Vincent_5353.jpg With tears in his eyes, Gene Vincent stepped up to accept the championship trophy after he defeated rookie Roger LeClair, 2-1, in the title match of the 2005 PBA Senior Lake County Open presented by Storm Thursday evening at Olympia Lanes.

Vincent, who took home $8,000 for his first career PBA Senior Tour title, broke a 1-1 tie with a 236-204 game three win. The 53 year old struck five times in frames 3-8 while LeClair struck just once over the same span.

"I have so much pride having 'PBA' on my shoulder, and winning a title can't take that away," said Vincen. "It was my dream to win." Vincent dropped the first game, 202-193, after suffering two opens over his first four frames which LeClair took advantage of with three single pin conversions and a strike.

In game two, Vincent struck four times in his first five frames to jump out to a 31-pin lead through five frames en route to a 218-197 victory. The title win marked a long day for Vincent, who bowled 20 games over five different matches on the day. He had to come from behind in three of those matches.

Vincent advanced to the finals by beating James Brenner, 2-1. With the match tied 1-1, Vincent found himself down 41 pins through six frames in the final game. He fired five straight strikes, forcing Brenner to strike out in the 10th. Brenner left a 10 pin on his first shot, giving Vincent a 225-215 win. LeClair swept Charlie Tapp, 2-0, in the semifinals as Tapp averaged just 176.50 for the match.

The 2005 PBA Senior Tour season concludes with the 2005 PBA Senior Jackson Open Aug. 13-17 at Airport Lanes in Jackson, Mich.

Dave Patchen continues to lead in Hammond

Dave Patchen has had some good days on the lanes before, and Wednesday was definitely one of those days. Patchen averaged 242.13 over eight games of qualifying Wednesday to hold on to the top spot with a 3,828 16-game pinfall in the 2005 PBA Senior Lake County Open presented by Storm at Olympia Lanes.

For the week, Patchen is averaging 239.25, over 18 pins more per game than his closest competitor. "I probably have a little more confidence than the other guys. There are some good guys out there that were struggling," said Patchen. "Basically, today was just a fun day. The fans were great. The fans keep you relaxed."

Patchen, looking for his first career PBA Senior Tour title, started off cold with a 194 in game one before rebounding with scores of 258 and 279 in games two and three, respectively. He went on to shoot 275 or better two more times, including a 275 in his final game.

Dick Baker is second with 3,537 for the week, good for a 221.06 average while Mickey Higham is third with 3,478. Ray Johnson is gunning for his second title in as many weeks, and is 10th with 3,367. This season's leader with two titles, Dale Eagle is 11th with 3,358.

James Brenner is 32nd with 3,235, and beat out Guppy Troup for the final spot in the round of 32 by 11 pins. The top 32 qualifiers move on to the best-of-five games match play round of 32 Thursday morning, with the bowlers seeded based on their qualifying finish.

The semifinals and finals on Thursday evening will feature best-of-three match play, with the winner taking home the $8,000 top prize.

Dave Patchen achieves perfection to lead in Hammond

Left-hander Dave Patchen used a big hook and a 300-game to jump out to the first round lead with a 1,891 eight-game pinfall in the 2005 PBA Senior Lake County Open presented by Storm Tuesday at Olympia Lanes.

Patchen, whose best career finish is 6th in the 2005 PBA Senior Clarksville Open, played out by the gutter, using a big hook to carry the ball into the pocket.

"That's the way I do it," said Patchen about playing on this week's PBA Senior Tour oil pattern, which favors players that can play the edges of the lanes. "I get the ball out to the first or second board (the two boards closest to the left gutter) and I just let it come back."

Patchen, a beer truck driver from Oregon, Ohio, began his day with a 201 before averaging 240.00 over his next four games. He added the event's only 300 game in his seventh game to solidify his spot in the first of two squads to bowl today.

Don Sylvia is second with 1,835 and is looking for his second career PBA Senior Tour title. Doug Evans is third, 1,792, with Mel Wolf, fourth with 1,779. Rounding out the top 5 is Ray Johnson, last week's 2005 PBA Senior Manassas Open winner, with 1,775.

Tom Baker, the PBA Hall of Famer from Buffalo, N.Y., withdrew from this week's event with a sore back. He won the 2005 PBA Senior U.S. Open earlier this season and is a leading candidate for the PBA Senior Player of the Year award.

The entire field will return Wednesday for an additional eight games of qualifying, after which the top 32 will move on to match play beginning Thursday. The semifinals and finals on Thursday will feature best-of-three match play, with the winner taking home the $8,000 top prize.
