Seasoned campaigner Wendy Chai (pictured) did not give up when the going was tough and painful over the last few months.
And her perseverance paid off yesterday when she was named in the six-member bowling squad for the women's world championships, which will be held in Las Vegas from July 25-Aug 2.
The others in the team are Esther Cheah, Shalin Zulkifli, Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman, Sharon Koh and Zandra Aziela Ibrahim Hakimi.
And those who failed to make the team were Sin Li Jane, Zatil Iman Abdul Ghani and Choy Poh Lai, who quit the team the previous day to take up a coaching career.
Wendy, who took five months to recover from a knee surgery, was happy that she won the race against time to make the cut for a fourth appearance in the world championships.
"I was really worried when I reported for training in April. I had gone for surgery last October and I did not know how I would cope with it," she said yesterday.
"Everything seemed so tough. I had to get back my rhythm and at the same time, the fear of getting injured again was at the back of my mind.
"I had a short time to prove that I deserve a place in the squad. It was not easy to push myself against time but I am certainly glad that I made it."
The recent Singapore Open was the only tournament that Wendy had the chance to gauge how she would fare in a competitive arena. And she did well to make the Masters Finals.
"I was even worried after the Singapore Open but I am happy that the coach (Holloway Cheah) still has faith in me," she said.
Wendy was the member of the Malaysian team who won the gold medal in the 2003 and 2007 editions of the biennial championships in Kuala Lumpur and Mexico respectively. She also won the Masters bronze medal in the previous championship.
"My goal is to help the team retain the title. It will be a bonus for me if I can nail another individual medal. For now, I must focus on getting my game back to top," she said.
