2009USBCOCJrTeamUSASupport2.jpgAfter moving into sixth place in Regular Team at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships on Monday, the members of Jr. Team USA Support of New Port Richey, Fla., continued showing off their skills during doubles and singles Tuesday night.

L-R Jr. Team USA Support - Ronnie Sparks, Clay Herrbach, Shawn Ryan, David O'Sullivan and P.J. Haggerty.

Comprised of former Team USA and Junior Team USA members, the group posted a 3,307 total in team and made a run at the Team All-Events lead Tuesday before settling into fifth place with a 10,034 total. Linds Limited of Milwaukee, which leads Regular Team with 3,449, also leads Team All-Events with 10,372, the third-highest total in USBC Open Championships history.

Jr. Team USA Support became the fifth team this year, and the 20th overall, to surpass the 10,000 mark at the Open Championships. In 1996, Pollard's Bowl of Versailles, Ind., set the Team All-Events record with 10,425.

Over the years, the members of Jr. Team USA Support have become friends while competing with and against each other, and while they reside in various parts of the country, the Open Championships gives them a reason to come together each year to have fun and aim for big accomplishments on the tournament lanes.

"I could not pick a better group of guys to do this with," said David O'Sullivan, who won the 2007 USBC Team USA Trials. "We're all like brothers, but we're all scattered around the country, so we look forward to coming here every year."

Years of experience in team bowling with the Team USA program and within the collegiate ranks worked in the group's favor at Cashman Center this week, and that mentality carried over into doubles and singles. The atmosphere was relaxed and enjoyable, and that led to confidence and good communication.

"It was a good trip, and we worked really hard," O'Sullivan said. "We didn't know what the scores were. We just wanted to get every pin down."

P.J. Haggerty of Clovis, Calif., who will begin his career as an exempt player on the Lumber Liquidators Professional Bowlers Association Tour in less than a month, led the way for Jr. Team USA Support with a 2,118 all-events total. He was followed by O'Sullivan (2,051), Ronnie Sparks (1,986), Clay Herrbach (1,972) and Shawn Ryan (1,907). For Jr. Team USA Support, this year's tournament was a farewell for Haggerty, whose exempt status on the PBA Tour will make him ineligible to compete at the Open Championships. The bowlers were aiming for a title this year, and even though they didn't get to the top, they were satisfied with the team's performance and Haggerty's sendoff.

"He won't be bowling with us next year, but he's going to come and hang with us," said O'Sullivan, who sharpens his skills at Seminole Lanes. "We already have a good bowler lined up to join us."

Presenting sponsors for the 2009 USBC Open Championships are the Coast Casinos in Las Vegas and the Eldorado Hotel Casino, Silver Legacy Resort Casino and Circus Circus in Reno, Nev. Other participating sponsors are Kegel, official lane maintenance provider; Brunswick, capital equipment supplier; Storm Products, Inc.; Binion's Gambling Hall and Hotel and Four Queens Hotel and Casino, the official brackets sponsors; Sapphire Gentleman's Club; Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino; MGM Mirage; Jerry's Nugget Casino and Fitzgerald's Casino and Hotel.
