Regular Singles Champion won't repeat at USBC Open Championships

2009USBCOCBryanYoung.jpgBryan Young of Everett, Wash., came into the 2009 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships knowing he would have to roll the highest series in tournament history if he was going to become the first bowler to win back-to-back Regular Singles titles.

The 35-year-old right-hander confidently entered singles after shooting 682 in team and 627 in doubles, but after three frames, it was mathematically impossible for him to top Bo Goergen of Midland, Mich., who leads Regular Singles this year with 862.

"That's a big score, and I knew it was going to be tough," said Young, who posted games of 184, 256 and 180 for a 620 singles set and 1,929 all-events total. "It's hard to realistically think about shooting 860, but if you put it all together last year, you have to think about doing the same things, getting lined up, making good shots and seeing what happens."

Once Young, who made his eighth tournament appearance, realized there wouldn't be another title for him this year, some of the pressure was off, but he still wanted to turn in a respectable performance.

"I was really hoping to get something started, so I was disappointed with how the first few frames went," said Young, who claimed the crown in 2008 with games of 278, 286 and 268 for an 832 series. "At that point, I was just thinking about shooting the best series I could and getting a good all-events total. My main goal coming in was to bowl well and make something of a showing."

The good news for Young, however, is that no matter how he bowls for the remainder of his tournament career, he always will be recognized as a champion, and he'll always have an orange eagle next to his name on the scoreboard.

"It feels special because very few people have that, and to know it's going to be up there every year can put a glow in your eye," Young said. "All in all, short of finishing strong, it was a successful year. I bowled well in team and shot 1,900, so I'm happy."
