Finland's Pöllänen and Colombia's Otalora win Singles gold at the 8th World Games

    2009WGKristaPollanen_small.jpg2009WGManualOtalora_small.jpgThird seeded Krista Pöllänen (pictured left), Finland, and second seeded Manuel Otalora (right), Colombia, claimed the women's and men's singles titles in the 8th World Games 2009 Wednesday at Happy Bowling Alley in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei, Top seeded Zara Glover, England, and Wu Siu Hong, Hong Kong, had to settle for silver, while Liza Del Rosario, Philippines, and Adrian Ang, Malaysia, got bronze.

    Wu, Glover one win away from Singles gold in World Games

     

    2009WGWuSiuHong.jpg2009WGZaraGlover2.jpgWu Siu Hong (pictured left), Hong Kong, Manuel Otalora, Colombia and Adrian Ang, Malaysia on the men's side and Zara Glover (right), England, Liza Del Rosario, Philippines, and Krista Pöllänen, Finland, on the women's side will bowl for gold, silver and bronze in the Singles stepladder finals in the 8th World Games bowling competition at Happy Bowling Alley in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei.

    All players combined 12 games of preliminaries Tuesday with their six-game individual totals from Monday's mixed doubles to cut to the top 10 men and 10 women, however, pinfall was dropped heading into Wednesday's round robin match play.

    2009WGManualOtalora.jpg2009WGAdrianAng.jpgA costly 4-7-10 split in the final frame of the last game kept Team USA's Chris Barnes, who was second after 18 games, on the outside of the top-three stepladder finals by 13 pins. Kong Byoung-Hee, Korea, who led the event from wire to wire, landed in fifth place.

    Hong Kong's Wu Siu Hong led the men's field and earned the top seed for the stepladder finals with 2,259 10-game total plus bonus (10 per win). Colombia's Manuel Otalora (left) was second with 2,240, while Malaysia's Adrian Ang (right), who beat Barnes 245-187 in the final game, was third with 2,234.

    2009WGLizaDelRosario.jpg2009WGKristaPollanen.jpgOn the women's side, England's preliminaries leader Zara Glover, England earned the top seed with 2,219. Liza Del Rosario (left) of the Philippines was second with 2,170, while Finland's Krista Pöllänen (right) was third with 2,138.

    The stepladder finals were scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. local time.

    Bowling is one of more than 30 sports not currently included in the Olympics that are being showcased in the World Games until July 26. Bowling, along with archery, billiards and bocce, is classified as a precision sport.

    The American Zone is represented by Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, El Salvador and the United States. The Asian Zone has sent Chinese Taipei, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Philippines, China and Hong Kong, while the European Zone countries are Austria, England, Finland, Germany, Belgium, France, Norway and South Africa.
