Stefanie Nation brings home first gold medal for USA in Singles event at Women's World Championships

Team USA's Stefanie Nation (pictured left) started the 2009 Women's World Championships in Las Vegas with victory in the Singles competition.
For the first time in WWC, the world champion wasn't crowned after six games but decided in a final of the top 4 players after the preliminaries.
The final match leaves enough room for improvement in future championships as Nation defeated Sandra Gongora, Mexico, in a very low scoring encounter, 167-131, to claim the gold medal.
Mexico's rising star suffered five open frames while Nation had three opens but also a double to put the match away before the final frame.
This is the second consecutive gold medal in Singles for the United States as Nation followed in the footprints of Shannon O'Keefe, who won the title in 2007 in Monterrey.
Nation, who led the field of 228 players from 45 countries after the preliminaries with a 226 average, eliminated #4 Krista Pöllänen, Finland, in the semifinals, 220-195. Gongora, seeded second, flew past #3 Anja Ginge-Jensen, Denmark, 258-209. Gongora received the silver medal while Jensen and Pöllänen shared the bronze medal.
