    The Blind Bowling Congress Japan hosted the Tenpin Bowling for the Blind Japan International Open 2009 from August 10-15 at Tokyo Port Bowl, a 34-laner with AMF wooden lanes in Tokyo, Japan.

    48 bowlers - 39 male and 9 female - from 7 countries, Australia, Czech Republic, Chinese Taipei, Finland, Korea, Malaysia and Japan, participated in the event.

    The Open was supported by the Japan Bowling Congress, Bowling Proprietors’ Association of Japan, Supporters’ Association of School for the Visually Impaired University of Tsukuba, Japan Sports Association for the Disabled and Japan Paralympic Committee.

    2009JPNBlindOpenBowlingwithguiderailB1.jpgIn Blind Bowling, based on visual disability scaled by eye doctors, bowlers are classified into three categories: B1, B2 and B3.

    As category B1 includes both, bowlers without light perception and those with very little light perception, all the bowlers classified B1 have to wear eye masks to keep their playing field level.

    The Tenpin Bowling for the Blind Japan International Open 2009 is a mixed tournament with female bowlers given 10 pins handicap per game.

    Format:
    Singles: B1, B2 and B3
    Doubles: B2-B2 and B1-any class
    4-Player Team: Each team must have at least one B1 and one female bowler. A female B1 bowler fulfils both conditions.

    The next events for the blind bowlers are the European Open, August 2010 in Finland and the Blind World Championships 2011 in Malaysia.
