Nico Joris leads in men's European Champions Cup after Day One

2009ECCLogo_small.jpg2009EBT09MartinLarsen.jpgBelgium's Nico Joris averaged 247.75 on the short oil pattern to lead the men's division in the 32nd European Champions Cup after the first block of 8 games with 1982 pinfall total. Joris had seven games between 221 and 279 (2) and a low game of 202 to lead the field of 36 players from 35 countries by 41 pins.

Arturs Levikins, Latvia, finished with 1941 including 279 and 275 to land in second place with Group A leader Martin Larsen (pictured right), Sweden, in third with 1925.

Ryan Press, Northern Ireland, is a distant fourth with 1854 followed by Alexander Rauscher, Austria, with 1851 and Darren Cundy, England, with 1849.

German champion Michael Krämer is 7th with 1845. Rounding out the top 8 is Lluis Montfort, Catalonia, with 1824.

2009EBT04ThomasGross.jpgDefending ECC champion Thomas Gross (left), is 14th with 1723. Austria is the only country that has two competitors in the event.

The men will return on Friday morning and afternoon for the second block on long oil. The women will complete their second block on Thursday.

The ECC features the national champions or ranking leaders - one man and one woman per country - of the European Tenpin Bowling Federation member federations plus the defending champions.

All players will bowl three 8-game blocks (a total of 24 games) preliminaries over three days: Block 1 on short oil, Block 2 on long oil and Block 3 on short/long oil (left lane short, right lane long).

The top 8 players after the preliminaries will qualify for the single-elimination final in best-of-three games format. In each round the highest seeded player will bowl the lowest seeded player, the 2nd highest vs. the 2nd lowest, etc.) based on the standings after the preliminaries.
