2009VOThomasGross-7.jpg2009VOFinalStuartWilliams.jpgHometown favorite Thomas Gross (pictured right) defeated tournament leader Stuart Williams (left), England, in a high scoring championship match, 246-231, en route to become the first Austrian winner in the Columbia 300 Vienna Open Sunday afternoon at Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria.

Gross fell behind early as Williams, who won the Doubles (with Clara Juliana Guerrero, Colombia), led the Singles preliminaries and earned the top seed for the stepladder finals, started with three strikes, nine-spare, and another three strikes.

Gross, seeded second, who won the semifinal match against No. 3 Tobias Karlsson (below, right), Sweden, 276-201, tossed enough strikes to stay in the match until the 8th frame. Williams, who could shut out Gross, got a 10-pin in the 8th, and Gross all in a sudden had a chance to shut out Williams after striking on his next two balls.

2009VOFinalRobThurlby.jpg2009VOFinalTobiasKarlsson.jpgHe rolled his worst ball in the entire tournament and left the 5-9 combination. He spared for 246, which gave Williams the opportunity to throw three strikes and win by one pin.

When Williams didn't get a strike on his first ball, the match was. over. Gross earned the 6.000 top prize and 100 ranking points as the Vienna Open is one of the "Majors" on the European Bowling Tour. Williams received 4.000 Euro for second and split 1.600 Euro with Guerrero for the Doubles victory.

Karlsson, who eliminated Rob Thurlby (above, left) from England in a low scoring but close opening match, 186-166, pocketed 3.000 Euro for third place. Thurlby garnered 2.200 Euro for fourth place.

2009ViennaOpenLogo_small.jpg The 7th Columbia 300 Vienna Open was the 11th stop of the 2009 European Bowling Tour and one of the Tour's "Majors". The tournament drew 327 players from 27 countries. The 8th Columbia 300 Vienna Open, an EBT Gold tournament previously Major, will be held from Sept. 28 through Oct. 3, 2010 at Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria.

Plus Bowling will host another EBT tournament in 2010 as the inaugural Ebonite Austria Challenge (EBT Silver) will be held April 28 through May 2 in conjunction with the 2010 EBT Masters.
