Korean women and Malaysian men lead in 4-player team event after Block 1

Hong Kong's Katherine Lau rolls the second 300 game of the Asian Indoor Games

The Korean women and the men from Malaysia set the pace as the 4-player team event of the 3rd Asian Indoor Games has reached the halfway point Thursday at Saigon Superbowl in Ho Chih Minh City, Vietnam. The Koreans felled 2593 pins, an average of 216.08, while the Malaysians totaled 2763 (230.25).
AIG Singles and Doubles gold medalist Son Yun-Hee led the 48 women on long oil with 696 3-game total or an average of 232.00 behind games of 226, 217 and 253. Gang Hye-Eun was next with 655, followed by Son's doubles partner Jeon Eun-Hee with 654 and Hwang Sun-Ok, the most successful player of the 2009 Women's World Championships (2 gold, 1 silver) with 588.
Japan started the day with a 912 and 883 but had to settle for second place with 2488 after a 693 in game #3. Malaysia is third with 2474. Katherine Lau posted the second 300 game of the Games and the first by a woman in the first game and helped Team Hong Kong to finish the first day in fourth place with 2426. Just 7 and 13 pins off the pace for the top 4 are Indonesia (2419) and the Philippines (2413).
On the men's side, Malaysians Kang Bo Long, Rodson Tong, Kelvin Keong and Muhd Syafiq Ridhwan rolled games of 960, 943 and 860 to lead the teams from 18 countries with 2763 and an average of 230.25.
The Japanese team sandwiched a low game of 828 between 948 and 942 to land in second place with 2718. Indonesia was mere three pins behind in third place with 2715. Korea is a distant fourth with 2656 with Kuwait close behind in fifth place with 2650.
The 12 women's teams and the 18 men's teams will return on Friday for the second 3-game block on short oil. The top 4 teams with the highest six-game total in each division will advance to the semifinals. The No. 1 seed bowls the No. 4 seed and No. 2 takes on No. 3. The winners will bowl for the title and the losers will share the bronze medal.
The 3rd Asian Indoor Games drew 73 men and 49 women from 20 countries, who will bowl for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles and 4-Player team event.
