Richard Teece overtakes qualifying lead in Ebonite English Open 2009

Jean-Marc Lebon rolls tournament's first 300 game

2009EBT14RichardTeece.jpg2009EBT14RobKendall.jpgRichard Teece rolled a 1436 series in the 10th qualifying squad Friday evening at Lakeside Superbowl Nuneaton in Nuneaton, England, en route to overtake the lead in the qualifying of the Ebonite English Open 2009.

The 19-year-old (pictured left) had a slow start into his six-game block with 189, but rebounded with 265, 212, 277, 247 and 246 to beat out previous leader Phil Scammell for the top spot by 15 pins. Teece averaged 249.40 for the last five games and 239.33 overall.

Scammell fell one spot to second place with 1421 and is followed by Robert Kendall (above right), all from England, who had a 1403 series in Squad 9 after finishing his set with 255, 245, 244 and 255 (999).

2009EBT14JeanMarcLebon.jpg2009EBT14JimmyRavez.jpgEBT ranking leader Osku Palermaa, Finland, and Jimmy Ravez (pictured left), Belgium, are in fourth and fifth place, both with 1399. Palermaa had the higher last game, 279 to Ravez' 202.

Nick Froggatt, England, is mere one pin behind in 6th place with 1398. Diana Zavjalova, Latvia, is the best of 26 women in the 115-player field in 7th place with 1393 including 48 pins handicap, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

Places 8 and 9 belong to Matt Miller, England, and Isabelle Sacco, France, both with 1390. Rounding out the top 10 is Jean-Marc Lebon (right), Belgium, who rolled the tournament's first 300 game in the second game of his 1386 series in Squad 10.

With just four qualifying squads to go, Hayley Rumkee, England, holds the 46th and final spot to advance with 1273.

2009EnglishOpenLogo.jpg The Ebonite English Open 2009 is the 14th and penultimate stop of the 2009 European Bowling Tour and the last of the Tour's four "Challenger" events. The tournament will be held from Tuesday Dec. 2 through Sunday Dec. 6, 2009 at Lakeside Superbowl Nuneaton, a 24-laner in Nuneaton, England. Players will compete for total prize money of 32.400 British Pounds or approx. 35.550 Euro.

Qualifying continues on Saturday with the final four squads at 8am, noon, 4pm and 8pm. and ends with the ultimate one-game Desperado Squad scheduled for 11.30pm.

All players bowl at least one six-game block with unlimited re-entries allowed. A total of 50 players will advance to the finals, the top 46 from the qualifying plus the top 4 Desperados. The top 2 qualifying leaders earn four byes, places 3-6 receive three and places 7-10 get two byes.

The other 40 finalists will bowl 6 games starting from scratch. The top 24 advance to the second round and play another 3 games with the pinfall from Round 1 carried forward. The top 12 advance to best-of-three games single-elimination finals.

In each of the matches in the single-elimination finals, the highest seeded player will meet the lowest seeded player, the second highest seeded player will meet the second lowest seeded player, etc.

The field will be cut to 14, 8, 4 and then 2, who will bowl for the title with 5.000 British Pounds or almost 5.500 Euro going to the winner. England's Kirsten Penny is the defending champion.
