Richard Teece leads Ebonite English Open 2009 as the field was cut to the top 50

Dom Barrett shoots 300 en route to crack the top 10 in final qualifying squad

2009EBT14RichardTeece.jpg2009EBT14FionaBanks.jpg19-year-old Richard Teece from England, won the qualifying of the Ebonite English Open 2009 en route to lead 50 players into the finals on Sunday at Lakeside Superbowl Nuneaton in Nuneaton, England.

Teece (pictured left) had a slow start into the 10th qualifying squad Friday evening with 189, but rebounded with 265, 212, 277, 247 and 246 to overtake the lead. He averaged 249.40 for the last five games and 239.33 overall.

Places 3-4 belong to English bowlers. Fiona Banks was the best of 16 women (out of total 28), who survived the first cut, in second place with 1431 including 48 pins handicap, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

European ranking leaders Osku Palermaa (left), Finland and Dominic Barrett (right), England, won the final qualifying squads on Saturday, the second win for both during the 5-day qualifying.

Two-hander Palermaa tied his 1399 series from Squad 7 to remain in second place with 1399. Barrett started the 15th and final qualifying squad with the tournament's second 300 game en route to move into the top 10, who will receive up to four byes. Barrett added games of 211, 227, 239 and 226 before a final 192 cost him a better position. ´

2009EBT14JimmyRavez.jpg2009BWCDianaZavjalova.jpgHis 1395 pinfall total, however, propelled him into 9th place, just a few pins behind Palermaa, 6th placed Jimmy Ravez (left), Belgium (1399), No. 7 Nick Froggatt, England (1398) and defending champion Kirsten Penny, England, who was 8th with 1396.

Rounding out the top 10 was Diana Zavjalova (right), Latvia, who chalked up 1393 including handicap.

Kevin Jaap , England, beat out Phillip Spooner-Kargotis from Cyprus for the 46th and final qualifying spot by 5 pins, 1292 to 1287. Spooner-Kargotis, however, was one of four players who made the first cut through the one-game Desperado Squad thanks to a 236 game.

Matt Giles, England, led the Desperado squad with 246 to join his wife Zara in the final. Also advancing were Mohamade Sarmadi, France, with 237, and Kevin Francois, France, with 232.

2009EnglishOpenLogo.jpg The Ebonite English Open 2009 is the 14th and penultimate stop of the 2009 European Bowling Tour and the last of the Tour's four "Challenger" events. The tournament will be held from Tuesday Dec. 2 through Sunday Dec. 6, 2009 at Lakeside Superbowl Nuneaton, a 24-laner in Nuneaton, England. Players will compete for total prize money of 32.400 British Pounds or approx. 35.550 Euro.

The top 46 from the qualifying plus the top 4 Desperados advanced to the finals on Sunday, Dec. 6. The top 2 qualifying leaders earn four byes, places 3-6 receive three and places 7-10 get two byes.

The other 40 finalists will bowl 6 games starting from scratch. The top 24 advance to the second round and play another 3 games with the pinfall from Round 1 carried forward. The top 12 advance to best-of-three games single-elimination finals.

In each of the matches in the single-elimination finals, the highest seeded player will meet the lowest seeded player, the second highest seeded player will meet the second lowest seeded player, etc.

The field will be cut to 14, 8, 4 and then 2, who will bowl for the title with 5.000 British Pounds or almost 5.500 Euro going to the winner. England's Kirsten Penny is the defending champion.
