Rolls her first two career 300 games in the single-elimination finals

Burbridge, who took the 22nd and final spot for the single-elimination finals after nine games on Sunday morning, rolled her first career 300 game in the deciding game of her Round of 16 match against compatriot Nick Froggatt en route to win the best-of-three game match, 2-1.

Burbridge went on to defeat No. 3 Phil Scammell, 2-0, ousted top seeded Richard Teece , 2-1, before she rolled her second career 300 game in her semifinal match against Rob Thurlby , all from England, on her way to a 2-0 victory.

Sandbækken, who beat out Burbridge for the 21 seed by two pins after Round 2, went the distance to defeat defending champion Kirsten Penny, No. 4 seed Robert Kendall and No. 2 seed Fiona Banks, before he swept #14 Darren Cundy, all from England, in the other semifinal match fort he right to bowl Burbridge for the title.

2009EBT14Top4.jpgBurbridge won the first game against the former World Youth and European men's Masters champion in a low-scoring affair, 190-143 and cruised to a stunningly ruthless 2-0 victory with a 251-205 win in game #2. Burbridge received 8 pins handicap each game, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

Sandbækken pocketed £3.000 for second place, while Thurlby and Cundy got £1.750 each for third and fourth place, respectively.

2009EnglishOpenLogo.jpg The Ebonite English Open 2009 is the 14th and penultimate stop of the 2009 European Bowling Tour and the last of the Tour's four "Challenger" events. The tournament will be held from Tuesday Dec. 2 through Sunday Dec. 6, 2009 at Lakeside Superbowl Nuneaton, a 24-laner in Nuneaton, England. Players will compete for total prize money of 32.400 British Pounds or approx. 35.550 Euro.

The top 46 from the qualifying plus the top 4 Desperados advanced to the finals on Sunday, Dec. 6. The top 2 qualifying leaders earned four byes, places 3-6 received three and places 7-10 got two byes.

The other 40 finalists bowled 6 games starting from scratch. The top 24 advanced to the second round and played another 3 games with the pinfall from Round 1 carried forward. The top 12 advanced to best-of-three games single-elimination finals and meet qualifiers 7-10 in the Round of 16.

In each of the matches in the single-elimination finals, the highest seeded player met the lowest seeded player, the second highest seeded player met the second lowest seeded player, etc.

The field was cut to 14, 8, 4 and then 2, who bowled for the title with 5.000 British Pounds or almost 5.500 Euro going to the winner.

It's down to four in Ebonite English Open 2009


2009EBT14VikkiBurbridge.jpgNo. 1 seed Richard Teece and No. 2 seed Fiona Banks, were eliminated in the quarterfinal of the Ebonite English Open 2009 as all four lower seeded players won their matches in best-of-three games format, two-games-to-one.

No. 13 Rob Thurlby is now the top seeded player and takes on No. 22 Vikki Burbridge (pictured left), who rolled her first career 300 game in the Round of 16 and has already won the women's rankings.

In the other semifinal match, No. 14 Darren Cundy, all from England, meets No. 21 Mads Sandbækken, Norway.

 


Ghislaine van der Tol leads another 12 players into the finals at Ebonite English Open 2009


Meet top ten qualifiers in single-elimination best off three games match play

2009EBT02GhislainevanderTol.jpgDutch national team member Ghislaine van der Tol (pictured left) rolled games of 225, 224 and 234 in the second round of the finals in the Ebonite English Open 2009 to earn the No. 11 seed for the single-elimination finals in best off three games format.

The lefty led the top 12 players, 6 women and six men, into the match play finals with 2119 pinfall total including 8 pins handicap each game and a 227.11 average over nines games.

Mike Quarry, England, who led the 24 players after Round 1 with 1458 six-game total added 640 in Round 2 to finish second with 2098 and the field-best 233.11 average.

Vikki Burbridge, England, took the 12th and final spot with 1951 9-game total. Nine players from England, plus van der Tol, Isabelle Sacco, France, and Norway's Mads Sandbækken will join the qualifiers 7-10 in the Round of 16.

 

Mike Quarry shoots high series to lead Final Round 1 in Ebonite English Open 2009

 

2009VOMikeQuarry.jpgEnglish international Mike Quarry (pictured left) rolled the highest six-game series in the first round of the finals of the Ebonite English Open 2009 to lead the top 24 players into the next round. Quarry felled 1458 pins including three 250s and averaged 243 for the round.

Ghislaine van der Tol, Netherlands, used back to-back 270s to land in second place with 1409 including 48 pins handicap. Mark Wells, hit the cutoff number for 24th place with 1224 (204.00).

Among those who failed to advance were Jean-Marc Lebon, Belgium (28th, 1184), who had the first of two 300 games in qualifying and European Bowling Tour women's ranking leader Nikki Ainge, England (30th, 1171).
