Robert Andersson sets the pace in Final Round 2 in Qatar Open

Britt Brøndsted wins women's rankings in Doha

2009VOMathiasArupRobertAndersson.jpg2009VOToreTorgersen.jpgRobert Andersson (left picture, right) became the third Swedish leader in the 9th Qatar International Open after qualifying leader Martin Larsen and Final Round 1 leader Mathias Ã…rup (left). Andersson felled 1392 pins over six games and average of 232.00 to lead the top 10 players into a clash with the top 6 qualifying leaders on Saturday.

Past PBA exempt player Tore Torgersen (picture right) led after five games but finished second behind a 175 final game with 1379. Aussie Andrew Frawley was third with 1348. Dominic Barrett, England, was one of two players from the group of players who earned a bye for the first round of the finals (qualifiers 7-12), who survived the third cut.

George Frilingos, Australia, who made the first two cuts in last and penultimate place, missed the cut by 15 pins in 11th place.

Among those, who failed to advance were all PBA players, Stuart Williams, England (13th), Mika Koivuniemi Finland (15th), Pat Healey, United States (18th), Osku Palermaa, Finland (20th) and Tim Mack, United States (24th) as well as Round 1 leader Ã…rup (21st) and both women in Round 2, Caroline Lagrange, Canada (19th) and Patricia Luoto, Germany (23rd).

The 9th Qatar Open is the 15th and final event on the 2009 European Bowling Tour and one of the Tour's "Major's". The EBT has announced that the 2010 edition will be upgraded to "Platinum", the highest status of the Tour besides Gold, Silver and Satellite.

A total of 48 players - the top 38 qualifiers and the top 3 each from Dec. 12 and 13 squads plus the top 4 from the Desperado Squad - advanced to the finals on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 18-19, 2009.

The top 6 qualifiers bypass the first two rounds, while places 7-12 received one bye. The other 36 players bowled six games from scratch to cut to the top 18. Those 18 plus qualifiers 7-12 also bowled six games from scratch in Round 2 and cut to the top 10, who will join the top six qualifiers in Round 3 on Saturday.

Those 16 will bowl six games from scratch to cut to the top 8, who will bowl another six games with the pinfall from Round 3 being carried forward. The top 4 will advance to the championship round. All matches over two games total pinfall.

No. 1 bowls No. 4 and No. 2 meets No. 3. The winners will advance to the championship match to bowl for the title and the 30.000 Euro top prize (approx. 43,865 U.S. Dollar). The runner-up will be consoled with 15.000 Euro.

Players seeded 7-17 in qualifying and top 18 from Round 1 bowled six games from scratch. The top 10 advanced to the next round.
